Pushes 2007 deadline in proposal to remove US soldiers from Iraq
WASHINGTON -- Senator John F. Kerry is pushing back by six months the deadline he wants to set for removing combat troops from Iraq, as he seeks to build support in the Senate for his plan for troop withdrawal.
The proposal to be offered by Kerry today would require President Bush to remove nearly all US troops from Iraq by July 1, 2007. The Massachusetts Democrat's initial plan -- to remove troops by the end of 2006 -- received just six votes in the Senate last week, and the later date is intended to build support for the proposal, said April Boyd, a Kerry spokeswoman.
``Every vote for a deadline withdrawal is Congress saying to President Bush that we will not accept war without an end policy in Iraq," Boyd said.
Yet the concept of any deadline for troop withdrawal remains controversial among Democrats. Prominent Democratic senators, including Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York , have rejected the idea of setting a time frame for bringing home troops.

He voted for immediate withdrawel before he voted against it.
The policy of setting a date is flawed, so THAT he sticks with.
Can't they grasp the fact they have no power? They voted, its a non-issue! Move on....
Some of us like to call the Republicans the "Stupid Party." With stuff like this going on, I may have to retire that.
did he check with France first?
It's a campaign platform.
Republicans should grab this version of his bill and put it up for a vote like they did last week. Then everytime someone drafts a bill like it, they do the same until the troop deadline for withdrawl is 2020.
He set a date before he set the date.
Well, at least Kerry is being consistent.....
"did he check with France first?"
Did he check with his butt-boy Wade first?
[Some of us like to call the Republicans the "Stupid Party."]
I don't get it. Which of us "like to call the Republicans the 'Stupid Pary'"?
Did I miss a meeting or something??..where in the constitution does it state that Congress is the Commander in Chief???..I know Congress can cut off funding..but they do not run the military..or did I miss something???
In the alternate reality world of John Kerry it is not a flip or a flop. This is a Kerry Executive Order.
He really defies parody. I heard him on Imus this morning. Smug, smamry, self righteous, and scary naive. To think how close we came to having him as POTUS gives me the willies.
It's beyond me how the people of Mass. keep sending this loser back to Washington(both of them), it doesn't shed them in a very good light.
I heard Kerry on Imus this morning. His proposal does everything for everybody. The proposed legislation allows the US to keep troops there if needed (special forces). He does not expect the legislation to go anywhere, but he wants us to know that he has a better way. And that everything bad that has happened so far is Bush's fault. He had no comments on everything that has happened that is good, though.
If I weren't so busy trying not to barf I would have turned him off.
First he should advance the date when he'll pull his head out of his a&&.
