Election Year Hypocrisy From Byrd On School Prayer

WASHINGTON-Senator Robert Byrd opened himself up to charges of election year hypocrisy yesterday as he pushed for a school prayer amendment despite the fact his re-election campaign's largest financial backer is the anti-school prayer group MoveOn.

"To those who have doubts that Senator Byrd has lost touch with the common sense values of West Virginia, I recommend they look at who is bankrolling his campaign. $800,000 is a lot of money from a group dedicated to stopping the very type of school prayer amendment Senator Byrd was praising. This is called hypocrisy," said NRSC spokesman Dan Ronayne.

Byrd Is Happy to Have MoveOn's Help: "I Welcome Their Support, I'm Glad To Have It." (Robert C. Byrd, Hoppy Kercheval's "Talkline," September 27, 2005)

Sort of absurd for Byrd to promise sponsorship of a bill, which in spite of his merits, he will never be able to lead his own party to support. And which goes against the policies of all of his sponsors.

Also, don't forget that 'Senator Sheets' claims to have reformed of his KKK ways, yet from what I've heard, he is still very much a racist. A few years ago, he made a comment about how there are a lot of "White ni***rs" in this country. This, coming from the man who Democrats refer to as the "Conscience of the Senate".
