I saw 4 F-14's fly over Kensington, Maryland today and I thought about how they will be missed. Definitely an "End of an Era"

A couple of years ago, an F-14 flew over my house at treetop level with full afterburners. I live in the center of North Carolina. I think they were playing games with the Air Force guys at Pope AFB.
It's a glorious thing to behold.

Great post, GeeBee. You found some awesome F14 photos. I wish I knew more about military jets so that I could identify them when I see them - and remember them the next time I see them. I don't know one from another, but my husband can practically identify them when he hears them flying over (well, that's a bit of an exaggeration). LOL.
I truly admire the pilots that fly these incredible birds. I can't imagine being entrusted with a 38 million dollar jet.
Can you imagine landing this plane on that little tiny carrier??! YIKES!

I could fly a jet, if I wanted to. I don't want to.

Well, now that they are being retired, I should be able to get one at a discount, right?

Some years ago, when the F&A 18 was being conceptualized, Grumman was asked what the cost would be to re-open the F-14 production line.
My informant told me that Grumman shot the Navy a ridiculous price -- well above what a reasonable estimate should have been. Grumman apparently calculated that the "new" F-14 would be far superior to the F&A 18, and tried to get rich off of it.
And really, really pi$$ed the Navy off!
Thus, there will be no more F-14s.
Which is too bad, because it was a very capable airplane.
