The particularity of the cities is the lack of cars. Everyone is walking, sometimes they take packed public transportatins made of tramways, trolleys and even 2 storie buses. The bicycles are rare and expensive.
The pedestrian zebra is original.

The wife was pulling the plow, hooked up to it like a mule!

Sounds like something you'd pay extra for in San Francisco.

The entire quote...

Turner: "Well I hope I'm right, too. But you know it's, in the Bible says you're supposed to forgive seven times seventy, or something like that, but just because, just because, you know, I mean, in 1940, the Germans were our enemies. For the last 50 years, they've been our allies. Same with the Russians were our enemies before '91 when the Cold War ended. Let's give 'em a break. Give 'em a break And besides, even if they do -- even if they do threaten us again, the threat is non-existent to the United States. They can't threaten us. I mean, it's like a fleet attacking an elephant."

Something's creepy about these pictures...

There is indeed. While we can't know for sure (nor do I think I want to know) the depths of depravity of which Kim Jong Il is capable of, the thought occurs to me that his intentions regarding the North Korean people may be not unlike that of Hitler towards the German people as the fuehrerbunker was threatening to cave in on him, or more likely that of the infamous "Reverend" Jim Jones, who forced his followers into mass suicide via cyanide when he realized that his Marxist "Jonestown" experiment was about to go bust after the visit of the late Congressman Leo Ryan.

KJI, should he be contemplating his own demise, may view all of the North Korean people as expendable, because as any murdering criminal knows, it is the witnesses you leave behind who write your history, ergo, Kim most likely would prefer to see everyone in that failed worker's paradise die with him, rather than to let anyone survive.

Now whether or not he has the MEANS to carry that out, remains to be seen. If there were any lingering tyrants who deserve the fate of Romania's Ceasescu and his wife, it is certainily Kim Jong Il and his poisonous clan.

I love it when folks who have never seen communism up close and personal try to put the best light on it.

I was doing no such thing.

Don't be a moron. How do you know what countries I've visited?

I hear someone on the radio, today in fact, say that capitalism is the unequal redistribution of wealth and socialism is the equal distribution of poverty. Pretty interesting statement.

I love it when folks who have never seen communism up close and personal try to put the best light on it.

I spent some time in various parts of Yugoslavia back in 1973 (Tito was still in power then) working a summer job on a Danish cargo ship. One of our crew lost his way one night and fell asleep in a rowboat and got arrested for "stealing the rowboat". It took a good 6 weeks for the embassy to get him out of jail, and when he rejoined us they had broken several ribs and all his fingers. His cellmate had been in there for years for stealing a jar of marmelade.

I can also tell you all sorts of stories from my visits to the USSR in the 80's (and Latvia and Estonia).

Anyone who thinks life under communist rule is anything but misery is completely ignorant of the facts.

Even if Mr. Ronery gets his comeuppance tomorrow, the scars on the people's souls will last for generations.

Don't be a moron. How do you know what countries I've visited?

I doubt anybody who has ever visited a communist country would make a statement like, "Well, to be honest, I could snap a picture standing in the middle of Constitution Avenue between the Treasury Dept building and the US Capitol at 6 AM Sunday and see the same desolation. as if to make an excuse why there is no traffic.

Don't worry. You're in good company. My 35yo UT-Austin educated BIL says that he doesn't have the same view on communism that I do. That he doesn't see it as the boogeyman I do but just another economic system. But, yes, he is a moron.

So which communist countries have you visited that have been different from NK?

Oh ya... "all those cars" really need a person directing traffic. That woman either has the most coveted job in town or the traffic lights have no electricity

Even if there are no cars at the intersection, she is extremely busy directing the nonexistent traffic with precision moves which would put most drill teams to shame. It is a strange sight to see.
