Having power doesn't make China better. I don't think they are comparable in terms of better off.

6 lanes of highway downtown showing almost 10 blocks of buildings.

Middle of the day.

One traffic cop standing in the middle of the intersection.

No pedestrians. No business going on. No workers.

And only 6 cars.

RE: no cables.

That could be a good thing if they ever get their crap together, they can start with newer wireless technology etc... but it will probably not happen in my lifetime.

EMP would NOT be a good thing for their military should war start.

Er, continue.

They never actually even got a treaty stopping the 50's war.

Where do you go to buy a six-pack, milk, cigarettes, snacks or a newspaper?

There are none. If they were you wouldn't have the money anyway. a six-pack Get serious It would probably taste like it was brewed though a horse. Now If you are a party member, you could get most anything. You know, its a classless society.

Even if Mr. Ronery gets his comeuppance tomorrow, the scars on the people's souls will last for generations.

Same goes for the Cubans living under Castro.

There are lots of buildings, but the place looks deserted. There are a few people, but almost no signs of human occupation, no laundry on the line, no rugs airing on balcony railings, etc. The place looks like a ghost town with a few extras walking the streets.

I wonder how many of those structures are actually built-out. The majority of the place might be like a Hollywood "back lot" fascade. Or, perhaps a better analogy would be Patton's "invasion army" in England. Inflatable tanks, all that stuff.

Several movies have been mentioned, and I'll add one - the whole damned place looks like the opening sequence of "Joe Versus the Volcano" - except these poor people don't even have the luxury of the permanently flickering flourescent light.

Agreed. I, myself, have seen it in the faces of people I've met in Romania and elsewhere. Residual fear (what if it comes back?), anger (how will I be made whole for my losses?), shame (how did we let this happen?), resentment (why should you, who are no better than I, have been spared?), and grief (it happened, it can't be undone). The greatest crime of the leftists, which is also the great crime of Islam, is to see the individual as something to be molded and shaped and trained by the force of an outside authority. Our way is to hope that each will strive to be his best by his own volition, given freedom and the Word. The results differ as night differs from day.

Perhaps then you have seen these photos of a still radioactive Chernobyl taken by Elena, biker lady from Ukraine who visits regularly -- carrying a geiger counter. This is an eye-popping photo diary for anyone who hasn't seen it.

Elena’s amazing motorcycle visits to Chernobyl, diary and many photos

The absence of colors.

Wow, for sure, very gray, like a cemetary. And the absence of people, of activity. No cars or bikes moving about, no laundry hung out, no planters of flowers, like a ghost town.
