SEVERAL years ago, left-wing cartoonist Ted Rall published a cartoon mocking the ``terror widows" -- the bereaved of the Sept. 11 attacks as well as Marianne Pearl, the widow of kidnapped and slain journalist Daniel Pearl -- as a bunch of greedy and shallow attention-seekers. The outrage was universal. A number of press outlets, including The New York Times website, pulled the cartoon. Subsequently, when the Times and The Washington Post stopped carrying Rall's work, conservatives called it a victory for decency.
Now, the right has its own Ted Rall in the infamous Ann Coulter. In her new book, ``Godless: The Church of Liberalism," Coulter takes a whack at the ``Jersey Girls," four Sept. 11 widows who have been highly critical of the Bush administration. She refers to them as ``self-obsessed women" who ``believe the entire country was required to marinate in their exquisite personal agony," and then concludes with this zinger: ``These broads are millionaires, lionized on TV and in articles about them, reveling in their status as celebrities and stalked by grief -arrazies. I have never seen people enjoying their husband's death so much."
A number of conservatives, including prominent Republican blogger and radio talk-show host Hugh Hewitt, have denounced Coulter's statement. Unfortunately, many others have rallied to her defense. Radio and Fox News talk-show host Sean Hannity has mildly suggested that she may have gone too far, but has avoided condemning her outright and has given her plenty of airtime on his show.
Bill O'Reilly, the host of the Fox News show ``The O'Reilly Factor," has been harshly critical of Coulter's comments. Yet several of his conservative guests vigorously defended her. Republican strategist Karen Hanretty opined,

And the fact that they've trotted out one hysterical Marxist fanatic after another since the start of the war? Obviously nothing more than a coicidence!

Maybe not a thing. But that does not take away from the fact that, although she may have stated it in an impolitic way, she was merely stating the Truth. And if its the truth, or even arguably so, then whats the big problem?? Certainly not a legal one; No one is libeled, no one's rights are impinged.
If the author wants me to make an informed decision he'll have to show me the Tedd Rall cartoon in question.
Ann Coulter has received numerous emails from other 9-11 widows and orphans thanking her for her stand and her comments.
I guess many 9-11 widows and probably an overwhelming majority despise these four widows and are happy that someone has the moral courage to describe the famous four as they are perceived by many millions.

The Jersey gals were the packaging, presentation, and promotion of the liberal Soviet style 911 Commission, which was paid for by our tax dollars.
Apparently Ann is not for the faint hearted when exposing the liberal sacred donkeys.
You are exactly right, and her detractors validate her contention time after time. That is what is so fun about this debate. Ann says, "we are not allowed to respond to the grieving widows." And the media screams, "You are attacking grieving widows! You can't do that! That is dispicable!" The truth of Ann's point is proved again and again.
Not a bad point.

I haven't seen anything that would support that either way, either the overwhelming majority supporting her or the overwhelming majority condemning her. Coulter is entitled to her comments, same as Rall was. I'm not going to speculate on the true motives of those that they trashed because I don't pretend to know what they are.
They are scared because Ann give them no quarter, not even hiding behind the skirts of the Jersey Girls has worked.
If it were Michael Moore using those words about Bush-supporting widows, we would be outraged.
There are many widows of US servicemen who support President Bush. There are supporters of President Bush who are 911 widows. (they all aren't democratic political activists you know) Please point out to me the ones who are using their widowhood for partisan political gain
