Exclusive Book Excerpt: How an Al-Qaeda Cell Planned a Poison-gas Attack on the N.Y. Subway
Time Magazine ^ | June 17, 2006 | Ron Suskind

Posted on 06/18/2006 4:56:07 AM PDT by tomnbeverly

Al-Qaeda terrorists came within 45 days of attacking the New York subway system with a lethal gas similar to that used in Nazi death camps. They were stopped not by any intelligence breakthrough, but by an order from Osama bin Laden's deputy, Ayman Zawahiri. And the U.S. learned of the plot from a CIA mole inside al-Qaeda. These are some of the more startling revelations by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Ron Suskind, whose new book The One Percent Doctrine is excerpted in the forthcoming issue of TIME. It will appear on Time.com early Sunday morning.

U.S. intelligence got its first inkling of the plot from the contents of a laptop computer belonging to a Bahraini jihadist captured in Saudi Arabia early in 2003. It contained plans for a gas-dispersal system dubbed "the mubtakkar" (Arabic for inventive). Fearing that al-Qaeda's engineers had achieved the holy grail of terror R&D — a device to effectively distribute hydrogen-cyanide gas, which is deadly when inhaled — the CIA immediately set about building a prototype based on the captured design, which comprised two separate chambers for sodium cyanide and a stable source of hydrogen, such as hydrochloric acid. A seal between the two could be broken by a remote trigger, producing the gas for dispersal. The prototype confirmed their worst fears: "In the world of terrorist weaponry," writes Suskind, "this was the equivalent of splitting the atom. Obtain a few widely available chemicals, and you could construct it with a trip to Home Depot – and then kill everyone in the store."

So if the Presidents efforts have saved us from another attack the MSM will attack this premise by making up stories about how we were almost attacked and alluding that we would not have been able to stop it. It is way past time for us to stop this liberal PRAVDA.

Off topic: A terrific new freeper, Ikez78, has uncovered some interesting information; it's fully sourced here:

Big news last night in the Saddam - al Qaeda connection. al Baghdadi is a man leading the insurgency in Iraq currently. He was a Republican Guard officer for Saddam, companion of Zarqawi since the start of the war AND HAS BEEN FRIENDS WITH BIN LADEN SINCE MEETING HIM IN AFGHANISTAN http://markeichenlaub.blogspot.com/2006/06/abu-abdullah-rashid-al-baghdadi-former.html

Thanks for that and as I always say those that believe there is no link between Sadaam and Al-Qeada are just plain ignorant.

If the ragheads were not angry with Bush for kicking their sorry asses in Afghanistan and we weren't getting ready to close down the "Baghdad Butcher", why these plans never would have been made to begin with.

So you see, it is indeed Bush's fault.

"They were stopped not by any intelligence breakthrough, but by an order from Osama bin Laden's deputy, Ayman Zawahiri."

What they neglect to menion is that Zawahiri only changed his mind after being beaten silly by Jack Bauer, then threatened with worse - the full Jack Bauer treatment.

Does anyone come up with an answer that makes sense as to why they stopped this alleged atrocity?

Or was this all made up in the mind of the writer?

Like I said expect more stories like this because since we have not been attacked since 911 and that alone is a strong statement in favor for The President, The Liberal MSM will start running stories that say i.e., Well we easily could have been attacked but our enemy chose not too or some such horse hockey... Again no facts to back up these senseless claims just rhetoric out of American PRAVDA.

If America continues to succumb to the hypnotism of the Left well then God help us all.

Pinging jveritas!

Note in this article that al-Qaeda was going to use HCL & sodium cyanide and then in your translated document that Saddam was ordering HCL & sodium cyanide.

Not that I think they are related but interesting nonetheless and goes to show how really useless the UN inspections really were. Also the Goods Review List in the second link below further shows the futility of UN inspections.

So the left believes that all this is just coincidence right... Sadaam ordering chemicals and AL-Qaeda figuring out how to create deadly WMD from those same Chemicals.... too close to call coincidence here... But the MSM overlooks the truth.

"But the MSM overlooks the truth."

The MSM overlooks the fact that we have the most steadfast and courageous President of our time. The MSM is a disease.

They're downright traitorous.

They have actually been able to influence events in this war. It's reprehensible.

They did it recently after a nearly three-week period of calm in Baghdad in May. They revved up the ol' Haditha allegations to feeding-frenzy level and the violence picked right back up again.

Nobody will ever convince me that the timing of all of that was coincidental.

Lord help me, I despise the media and what they've done here.

Amazingly accurate... Liberal Pravda. It is truly disgusting they sell the country out to the enemy. So transparent and yet so many Americans hypnotized because they do not dig to find the truth.
