Specter Unvarnished [ Senator Reid something other than a rocket scientist; Kerry a dull jellyfish]
The American Spectator ^ | June 15, 2006 | Quin Hillyer

Posted on 06/17/2006 5:47:43 PM PDT by Torie

* On the seemingly uphill re-election campaign of his fellow Pennsylvania GOP Sen. Rick Santorum, whom Specter praised highly and called "indispensable to my re-election" two years ago: "His re-election is my number one priority.... We have a very close personal relationship as well as political and professional."

"He will win unless there is an avalanche.... He's a very forceful senator."

...

* On the Democrats' conduct during hearings for judicial nominees, Specter was close to scathing. "Schumer was absolutely rude to Alito." Filibusters "lost them Daschle and lost them a fair number of seats."

* On various Democrats: Minority Leader Reid, in various comments discussed at the dinner, "is not a deep thinker, to put it gently." Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry "didn't have any substance or any backbone." In 20 years, Kerry has "a remarkably vacuous record." Kerry at the podium is dullsville: "He's like a high school orator."

And former HHS Secretary Donna Shalala "was a colossal failure...

I don't much care for Specter, but he's got John Kerry nailed.

Arlen said all of that? Wow, maybe the chemo treatment turned him back into a republican. I hope he does do something about the 9th "Circus" court. He'd gain some more respect from me. Also, and popular with the conspiracy buffs, Specter was "on target" (pun intended) regarding the single bullet theory. Oswald acted alone, period.

This was an amazingly honest assessment of some of his colleagues.

That won't stop Mark Levin from nonstop ridicule of the man.

Even the mention of breaking up the 9th. Circus has meant some sane decisions lately.

Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry "didn't have any substance or any backbone."

Pot. Kettle. Black.

And Arlen's a fracking RINO. Since we're being honest and all.

I wish he talked like this on the Senate floor. I think this is a case of Specter being a politician and telling an audience what he thinks it wants to hear. I have known other conservatives who have met Specter and come away impressed by his grasp of issues and ability to turn on the charm. But it doesn't change the way he votes, and his votes clearly make him a RINO.

Jeez, I've met Joe Biden and John Street, and they were just as friendly as could be, but that didn't change the fact that they are dishonest politicians devoted to the Leftist agenda. Well, in Street's case, he's devoted to the John Street agenda, but that typically keeps him on the Left.

"His re-election is my number one priority.... We have a very close personal relationship as well as political and professional."

I think the answer is probably more along the lines that he knows that if Santorum loses it would risk him losing the Judiciary Committee Chairmanship...but whatever. If it'll help, glad (ahem) he's on board.

He seems to do that to Feingold on the floor. He seems to enjoy tormenting him and Feingold always runs away.

Well I wouldn't have said what he said, the way he said it. The dirty little secret is that Specter can be quite caustic. He really doesn't mind going for the groin underneath that pleasant calm RINO demeanor of his. Still, you must admit it was entertaining stuff, no?

As much as it pains me to give Arlen credit for anything, yes... it was entertaining!

I doubt it. That's just the real Arlen without cameras or a microphone around. His nickname isn't "Snarlin' Arlen" for no reason. I'm sure that his opinion of most Republicans is just as rough.

He does owe Santorum big time. We'll see if his actions back up his words of support. If I was his fellow GOP Senators, I'd make it clear to Arlen that he only gets to keep his chairmanship and plum committee seats IF Santorum wins.

Rick Santorum, whom Specter praised highly and called "indispensable to my re-election" two years ago:

This is part of Rick's problem.

Specter is still a genuine "slow leak" and cannot be trusted.

Will there be a follow-up about Chappaquiddick Teddy called, "Kennedy, Shellaqued?"
