Citizens group confronts sheriff on immigrants

'Copwatch' calls for sheriff to release immigrants from jail Friday, June 16, 2006 Members of a citizens group known as Copwatch protested outside Sheriff Joe Arpaio's office Friday morning. They held signs asking Arpaio to release illegal immigrants that his deputies and volunteer posse members have arrested. The arrests came under a state law making it illegal to conspire to smuggle humans into Arizona, or to conspire to be smuggled. Arpaio came down from his 19th floor office in the Wells Fargo Building to let the members of Copwatch present their complaints in person. They told Arpaio that he and County Attorney Andrew Thomas are misintepreting the law, which they claim was intended to apply only to coyotes, or human smugglers. Arpaio responded that with over two dozen immigrants already having pleaded guilty, the justice system has apparently agreed that the law is constitutional.

They recently expanded one of the jails. A reporter asked The Joke if he was going to be moving the Tent City inmates there since he finally had the room. He said no, he was going to keep them there.

It's what keeps him tough in everyone's mind. See, every other sheriff in America houses their inmates in an actual building, but not The Toughest Sheriff in America. He chooses to keep them in tents which can get up to 125 degrees in the summer.

Meanwhile, he brags about keeping his pound animals in an air conditioned building, and he spends more to feed dogs than he does the human beings he's supposedly responsible for.

I'm sorry, but to me it's inhumane, immoral, and totally unnecessary to treat people that way. Especially since approximately 70% of the "inmates" in Tent City haven't even been to trial yet. Isn't the punishment supposed to come after guilt has been established?

Most of the inmates are in custody for misdeameanors, which is why they haven't gone to trial yet - they're not exactly murderers or rapists, so there's no hurry. In fact, they're downright useful to the Joke - they help him keep his reputation as "TTSIA," since Tent City is his claim to fame.

What an especially mature response. From a grownup, no less.

I would tend to the opposite view. Most would save money in reduced crime. And in addition if his jail policies were implemented it would cost thousands of dollars less to house inmates. No perks, no bennies just "doin time" and saving tax dollars.

Please read the rest of the thread. It might open your eyes as to what drives this particular sheriff. I guarantee you, it's not the people of Maricopa County that he vowed to serve.

Yes... Some call that group "democrats".

I don't live in Arizona but my daughter and her family does, in Maricopa County as a matter of fact. I called her a few minutes ago and the first thing she wanted to know was why I was waking her up.

I asked for her opinion about Arpaio and she gave me an ear full. She pretty much agrees with your assessment of him, so I asked her why he gets reelected, she says he's the darling of conservatives because he appears to be tough on crime but in reality he is tough on those awaiting trial and haven't been convicted of anything yet.

She also thinks that not only Arapio has cost the tax payers a lot of money needlessly through law suits against the county and himself but will eventually end up in one of his own tents.

Anybody want to call me a liberal for not buying into this guys hype, have at it.

Insanity.

They do, and unfortunately much of congress as well as GW Bush are part of that advocacy group.

I'm surprized he doesn't retire. He served in the Army from 1950-53 (in the USA and France, not Korea). That means he was born no later than 1934, making him 72 at the very youngest.

On the other hand, I heard him on a radio show recently and he sounded younger than his years, and was definitely loving the radio/publicity/attention.

On the other hand, Dan Saban seems to have run a weak campaign. Defining yourself as "not Joe" is not going to work in a republic where most voters tick the box of the only name they know.

Anyway, I found it interesting to see another angle on this guy besides the public persona. Noted.

Thank you for having an open mind - which is what I have come to expect from the majority of Freepers.

Your daughter is right. He panders to the Sun City crowd. Most of them will NEVER end up in Tent City, so they don't care what goes on there....like the freepers who have commented here, yet live far away.

The Sun City crowd is what keeps him in power, along with the media. However, his popularity has been waning over the last few years as more and more people "catch on" to him, so fortunately his days in power are numbered.

When Ole Joke senses the wind has finally changed is when he will suddenly decide he's served "the people" long enough and go quietly into the sunset.

When he's really gone, then we'll hear the truth about him.

I'm counting the days....

I take it you mean the "retirees" that live there? So how does he "pander" to them?

He has a lot of town-hall meetings with them, from what I gather. Most of his campaign appearances are in that area. Gives the impression he cares about them, I guess.

You know, like what Bill Clinton did to the black population.

You say, "Sheriff Joke is an ass. If every county in America had one of him, the whole country would be bankrupt."

Sorry - whatever his personality may be, his policies are just what we need more of. I might not want him for homecoming queen but I sure wouldn't mind a few more just like him for Sheriff (or for the Senate!).

I wouldn't get too caught up in "IrishRainy." He/she seems to often try to create trouble on the blogs by taking an unpopular stand. Maybe a DU'er or maybe just loves to be an irritant but frequently out of the mainstream.

What blog?

I agree with him and I don't post on any blogs.

Further there are other posters on this thread that agree with him too. Does that mean we are all creating trouble or maybe we just have our own opinions in the matter?

Um, just a little advice, hon. You might want to check a poster's history before posting such drivel. Me, a DU'er? What are you smoking?
