Murtha said his stature in defense, and especially his ongoing battle with President Bush and top Republicans over the war in Iraq, makes him a strong candidate for the House leadership role.
So much on the national level right now is related to defense that it is a logical step, Murtha said. And what we have to do now is show the public that there will be change.
Some Republicans see Murthas war activism and his push for the high House seat as being divisive in his own party.
The GOPs position: Keep it up, Jack. A divided Democratic Party is good for all Republicans who are running for national offices.
That may or may not prove true. But this is a fact: The Democrats have not had the House majority since 1994.
Murtha himself must fend off Republican challenger Diana Irey, a Washington County commissioner, to keep his 12th district seat.
An Irey upset in November seems unlikely, but is not impossible especially considering Murthas polarizing stance on Iraq.
It will be interesting to see if Murthas early pitch for the majority-leader position has a positive or negative effect on his partys efforts to regain control of the House, or on his own political standing locally and nationally.

May not sound like a rousing endorsement of her chances, but I'm encouraged that media folks are starting to take notice. What was completely ignored by this author is that Murtha's district only went for Kerry with 51%. That 2-3 points can easily be overcome by the anger Murtha has generated.
Defend your Marine Corps and fight back against Jack Murtha.
Ping
I think he's from blue collar coal country in West Pa. Those folks are usually good old red blooded patriots who may be tired of Jack's bloviating. It would be wonderful in Irey beat him. She is also much easier to look at.
Then how did he get elected?
She's a very attractive candidate. What kind of a chance does she have if things keep improving and looking better for the good guys in Nov?
Knocking off Murtha would be sweet.
Everyone, please FReepmail me if you'd like on or off the Irey/Murtha ping list.
Not sure where I saw it, but, "Run For The Back Jack" will be on at least one of the Sunday morning "news" shows.
Probably more than one. As the elections near and his level of panic rises, I'm sure he'll be a Sunday morning regular.
Then how did he get elected?
"I'm encouraged that media folks are starting to take notice."
Absolutely, the more the media get her name in front of the people of the 12th District, the better her chances.

I live in Murtha's home base, and seeing Murtha go down would be a pleasure. But it isn't going to happen.
Those folks are good old die hard union members; that's how.
He probably got elected because those folks have voted Democrat since FDR, and have not realized the Democrat party they knew, has left them?
Murtha's "Cut & Run" Comments on Iraq: "there's no progress at all" "it's worse than it was prewar" "we should immediatley redeploy" "War cannot be won on the ground" "I have said it's a civil war" "We cannot win this militarily. Our tactics themselves keep us from winning," |
Murtha's Comments on our Troops: "Would you join (the military) today?," he was asked in an interview. "No," replied Murtha "And I think you're saying the average guy out there who's considering recruitment is justified in saying 'I don't want to serve'," the interviewer continued. "Exactly right," said Murtha "we have become a catalyst for violence" in Iraq Marines "killed innocent civilians in cold blood." at Haditha "I will not excuse murder, and this is what happened" "This is worse than Abu Ghraib" "Hopefully, this is an isolated incident. But we're supposed to be selling ideas of America, ideals of America, and we're losing that war." "These kind of things have to be brought out immediately," he told "This Week," "because if the Marines got away with it, other Marines might think it's okay." "What they're saying to me is we're stretching the military too thin. The army is broken, and we couldn't deploy to a second front if we wanted to." "The troops don't know what to do. They don't have the direction they need in order to supervise the prisoners," |
You're right we're red-blooded patriots. I, unfortunately, am one of Murtha's constituents. An acquaintance of mine is the wife of Murtha's field representative in my hometown. I asked her the other day if she'd seen "Flight 93." Her response was no, that she would be too upset, that she had never seen "Schindler's List" either for the same reason--because she might cry throughout the movie. She also told me once the only novels she reads are ones with happy endings.
I think this attitude typifies the kind of people who support Murtha's approach. Hide from harsh reality, bug out, cut and run. Maybe the bad people will just go away if we pretend they're not there. I almost called this woman a wimp to her face, but I bit my tongue. I hope western PA people are getting sick of Murtha's constant whining and hysterical outbursts. In my mind, he's becoming a joke. And I can't believe western Pennsylvanians want to be represented by a defeatist and a laughingstock.
Ding, Ding!!!!!! We have a winner. That's the nuts and bolts of it, plus all the defense contracts he brings in.
That's so disgusting on so many levels. Ugh!
Hopefully you are wrong.
