A former Children's Hospital nurse admitted to police that he sexually abused a terminally ill 4-year-old female patient “to see if he liked it,” according to court documents released yesterday.
Christopher Alan Irvin told police when they arrested him and searched his City Heights apartment in April that he molested the semi-comatose girl twice while she was under his care at the hospital, according to the documents.
After initially denying he ever touched patients at Children's Hospital in a sexual manner, Irvin told police he abused the dying child behind closed curtains in the intermediate care unit where he worked, according to a search warrant released by Superior Court Judge Frederick Maguire.
Maguire released another warrant Monday in which police reported finding a video clip on Irvin's home computer depicting a young girl performing a sex act on an adult man.
In the search warrant released yesterday, police said Irvin gave a detailed account of what he did to his patient at Children's Hospital.
Police also reported finding journals in which Irvin wrote of his urge to be with young children.
“This is killing me. The girl downstairs is playing and I want to go play with her, ahhh !!!,” Irvin wrote in one journal entry, police said in the warrant.
In another entry, Irvin wrote that he wanted “to lay down at night” with a little girl and that he wanted to be with her as she grew.
“Oh God, I've strayed,” Irvin wrote in a third entry cited in the search warrant.
Police in the warrant released yesterday said they found videos and images of child pornography in files Irvin shared online with others who were sexually drawn to children.
In addition to computers and documents dealing with child pornography and with organizations that deal with children, police seized six computers from Children's Hospital, Irvin's personnel file and patient records.
Irvin, 32, is charged with sexually abusing the Children's Hospital patient and multiple counts of trafficking in child pornography. He is being held in jail in lieu of $2 million bail. He has pleaded not guilty.
A police detective testified in court Monday that the investigation into Irvin's actions has spread to Florida, where Irvin worked before coming to San Diego in October 2004.
Detective Susan Righthouse said investigators want to interview six children in Tallahassee to see if Irvin had any involvement with them.
Irvin told police that the first time he molested the girl at Children's Hospital “that he was curious and a little excited at the same time,” according to the documents.
He said he molested the child a second time because “he wasn't sure what he was feeling and he wasn't sure if he was interested in children,” police detectives reported in the warrant.
Irvin told police that “he didn't get sexually aroused, so he decided he was not interested in children” but he admitted that he continued looking at pictures of children.
Prosecutor Laura Gunn had objected to the release of the warrants, saying it would hamper the ongoing investigation of Irvin's actions, make it difficult to find an unbiased jury and invade the privacy of the parents of the child Irvin is accused of molesting.
Defense attorney Dawnella Gilzean also objected, saying that Irvin would be at greater risk of attack from other jail inmates if what he told police became public.
The secrecy was challenged by Guylyn Cummins, a lawyer for The San Diego Union-Tribune and KGTV Channel 10. Cummins said the public's right to know what is going on in the court system outweighs the other concerns.
The judge said all of the information would become public eventually, and that there is a sufficient jury pool in the county to ensure a fair trial.
Irvin is the second Children's Hospital worker facing child molestation charges, although authorities said the two cases are unrelated.
Former respiratory therapist Wayne Albert Bleyle, 54, of Santee is charged with sexually abusing five patients and faces multiple charges of posing or modeling children to create child pornography and distributing or offering to distribute child pornography
That poor child.

Death penalty.
The real question everyone should be asking is, why is this guy still alive?
He is a Sick Bastard
Candidate for back-alley justice.
Two words: public hanging.
A straight E-ticket to Hell. This guy better take his asbestos underwear.
I'd be glad to help build the gallows for this one.
Death Penalty via general population in the slammer.
It is a shame that we have to rely on the morals of inmates to see that real justice is done. I suggest a life sentence with mandatory participation as the control in ebola vaccine testing, the death penalty being too humane for that piece of genetic garbage.
I just can't comprehend people like this. I think I'm gonna puke....
This makes me ill. I would be very afraid to leave a child alone in a hospital these days. I'm sure that most of the people who work there do not do this stuff, however, they are out there.
susie
Anytime family members are in the hospital - our family tag teams to make sure there's someone there all the time. We learned this when I had a sibling in a coma. Things didn't get "forgotten" when family members were there.(He also stopped "accidently" rolling out of bed) With crap like this, I'd stay 24/7 without other family assistance if it were my daughter in the hospital.
I have a 4-year-old girl. I cannot imagine that anyone would be able to save the life of someone who abused her, and much more so if she was dying at the time and abused by someone who was supposed to be helping/comforting her.
IMHO, the death penalty is called for - he needs to meet his Judge ASAP.
Good thing I'm not this girl's father.
Sentence this bastard to 30 minutes with the girl's father.
I agree with your prescription - never leave the person alone. Of course, one would do this for the much more important reason of comforting the patient (dying or not) than to prevent abuse, but the 2nd is a very beneficial byproduct of showing simple human decency to your family.
I. Want. To. Throw. Up.
Now, put that f-ing sicko in the psyche ward and do NOT let him out with medication, do NOT let him out with Psycho Therapy, do NOT let him at all.
Sentence this bastard to 30 minutes with the girl's father.

I'll furnish the baseball bat and any other implements he may need.
