Why was it necessary for them to vote? I thought it was the Dems who bragged that unlike the GOP, they had a rule that precluded these scumbuckets from occupying leadership positions.

He hasn't been indicted yet. It's a complete mystery to me why he hasn't been indicted yet, as much slam-dunk evidence as they already have against him, but I'm actually in the tiny minority that questions whether it's right for him to be forced out when he hasn't even been indicted, regardless of how serious the allegations (and I believe he's 100% guilty).

Indeed.
No charges.
No indictment.
No arrest.
Expect Rush to continue sticking up for Jeffy on this point.
At least the GOP [usually] waits for more than just
incriminating evidence before tossing members overboard.

Last Update: 6/15/2006 8:36:39 PM CAPITOL HILL (AP) - Louisiana Congressman William Jefferson was suspended from the House Ways and Means Committee.
Jefferson emerged to tell reporters he had asked the other lawmakers "to put themselves in my shoes."
Jefferson, who's the target of a bribery probe, concedes he's facing "serious allegations." But he says the move to remove him from the Ways and Means panel is "unauthorized" as well as "unnecessary."
Asked whether he thought race was a factor, Jefferson, who is black, said: "It's never happened before and it does raise issues."
Jefferson refused to step down from the committee voluntarily. He maintains his innocence and has not been indicted. But the FBI says Jefferson stashed 90-thousand dollars in bribe money in his freezer, and two men have pleaded guilty in the probe.

House Democrats vote to strip Jefferson of committee assignment
07:39 PM CDT on Thursday, June 15, 2006 David Espo / Associated Press
WASHINGTON (AP) -- House Democrats, determined to make an election-year point about ethics, voted to strip Rep. William Jefferson of his committee assignment Thursday night while a federal bribery investigation runs its course.
Members of the rank and file approved the move after Jefferson refused for weeks to step aside on his own, and despite claims by some members of the Congressional Black Caucus that he was being treated unfairly.
Officials said the vote was 99-58. The action must be ratified by the full House, and Jefferson left open the possibility that he might at long last relent and surrender the seat on his own. "I don't want to speculate," he said.
The session marked the culmination of a drive by the Democratic leader, Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California, to take action against the embattled Louisiana lawmaker, who maintains his innocence and has not been indicted.
"This is not about a court of law. This is about a higher ethical standard, and you know when it isn't being met," she told reporters several hours before the meeting.
Jefferson is black, and Pelosi, brushing aside criticism from members of the black caucus, told reporters she had been "more than fair."
