New York -- Former President Bill Clinton praised evangelical Christians on Thursday for their recent efforts on global warming and debt relief for poor nations and said he sees growing understanding between people of different faiths.
Clinton made the remarks while accepting an award from the Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious Understanding. He said that as president he had "a consuming interest in the intersection of religion and politics."
He said evangelicals, few of whom voted for him, "were instrumental in the biggest debt relief initiative in history in my last year as president because they believed in the admonition of the Scripture to alleviate the burdens of the poor."

Oh, I don't think religion is very high on his most consuming interest list.

They want religion out, now they want it in. Talking out both sides of their mouths coming ans going. King Solomon was right there is nothing new under the sun..

So it is okay for different faiths to come together on global warming and debt relief but not on abortion and marriage?

The evangelicals he is refering to are the left wing protestant churches under the national council of churches (United Meth, PCUSA, ELCA, ECUSA, COC, etc). He is not courting them as their agenda reads like the DNC talking points on gay rights, immigration, abortion, the environment, anti Americanism and anti Israel.
These people have supported Clinton from the beginning.

I don't think religion is very high on his most consuming interest list. Certainly not as high as the intersection between bosoms & Big Macs...

There were a lot of Evangelicals that voted for Clinton's first term. What about the second term? Maybe some bible belt baptists did based on Clinton being from AR, but not many..

"their recent efforts on global warming" This is actually a recent strategy on the left. I saw an ad geared toward religious people on the environment. I seriously doubt it will have any effect. I can't see anyone who is a 'Christian right' voter going for a pro-abortion, pro-gay rights candidate.

Pardon me?
Isn't this the same Bill Clinton who had Janet Reno saying the biggest threat to the US was white evangelical Christians?

I just loathe the smug dishonesty here. 3d World debt relief does not "alleviate the burdens of the poor" unless by "the poor" you mean the handful of thieves and murderers who run most of those countries - into the ground - and spend their state budgets on Mercedes Benz limos and luxury goods for themselves and their cronies. Giving the kleptocrats yet another cash transfusion courtesy of the US taxpayer only keeps their crooked game going and prolongs the agony of the people they're oppressing.
