Tough rough, fast greens, now wind make for major test
As if brutal rough and lightning-fast greens weren't enough of a challenge, Mother Nature decided to throw her trump card into the mix Thursday at the U.S. Open. A noticeable breeze began to blow at Winged Foot, making an already difficult test that much more wicked.
7 players within 3 shots of the lead...
Ogilvy almost holes a bunker shot,, wow.
Monty gave himself a coupl eof chances, now he has to hope for a bogey bogey finsh for lefty.
Harrington is done.
That's too bad, he had it going on at first..

Mickelson extends lead at U.S. Open
AP
MAMARONECK, N.Y. - Phil Mickelson is four holes away from winning his third straight major.
After birdying holes No. 11 and 14, Mickelson had a 2-shot lead in the final round of the U.S. Open on Sunday.
If he can hold on, he'll join Tiger Woods as the only players in the last 50 years to win three straight majors.
Lurking two shots behind Mickelson at 5 over par were Geoff Ogilvy, Colin Montgomerie, Padraig Harrington and Jim Furyk. Kenneth Ferrie had fallen three shots back.
Mickelson and Ferrie started the round at 2 over, one shot ahead of Ogilvy.
What a putt for Monty...he's tied with Phil & Mick has two hard hole left.
Ow. how did Furyk miss that putt..
That is one mean course..
What a clutch drive by Monty. Phil needs a birsie on one of the final two...it won't happen. He got to aggressive with a driver that did not work. Monty nailed s3everal testy par putts.
Phil took a good rip at that one..
Monty just chocked away a perfect drive on 18 & no whas to hope for a play-off. Oglivy got a miracle on 17 and he can see a playoff too.
Phil just banged one of the corporate tent and got a bounce.. wow.
LOL
I love it when the pros struggle.
like the 17th at TPC Sawgrass (I think), it's great to see the pros make bad shots that I stuggle with sometimes...
Monty broke my heart. I'm neutral on this Oglivy fella but he may be in a playoff at worst. Phil does not deserve this one.
Phil needs to play for five and come back Monday with his A game.
He's not going to do it. Not with it in that bunker.
HE had this thing gift wrapped and played like a 40 handicapper on 18
Shot of the decade if he makes it close.. ;-)
Mickelson just made dumb decisions. All he needed was a par to win and a bogey to force a playoff. How stupid could he be playing a driver on that hole.
Done...he turned the clock back five years today. When you thought he learned to play in the big ones, he chokes.
