The much anticipated fireworks between Coulter and acid-tongued comedian George Carlin never came off, with Carlin sitting beside Ann smiling and saying nothing throughout her conversation with Leno except to note that he had to "move to the right” to allow Ann to sit beside her host.

I was wondering if Carlin would actually not want to provide any more controversy (either for the Tonight Show or Coulter) and just hold his tongue. It seems so.

Maybe he just showed a little class - rare for a lib, I know - but still possible!

I THINK ACID (ON THE TONGUE ) TONGUED might be more appropriate to describe carlin.

I would bet that Leno might have prepped the audience and Carlin to be respectful. Say what you want about Jay - but he does not go for the cheap laughs or approval. How snarky would Letterman have been?

He was polite. It's not impossible for liberals to be polite, just exceedingly rare.

I'm getting the impression Carlin simply just doesn't care anymore.

He's always been a liberal guy who just didn't like other liberals, and he's older now, promoting a movie (a kids movie no less).

He wants a paycheck, not a fight.

It's also simply a matter of the protocol of The Tonight Show. Typically, the earlier guests slide down the couch and sit there mostly quietly. They're supposed to let Jay (Nee: Johnny) interview the new guest and not try to upstage the host. There's exceptions of course, but the traditional protocol happens most of the time even among guests that you'd think would fight like cats.

I was interested that there seemed to be a change in Carlin: He gently "slugged" her shoulder when they both sat down. I was shocked.

I shouldn't have been: It's hard to argue publicly with the truth and not lose your reputation.

Even his poetic monologue wasn't extreme. It was just a bunch of rhythmic oxymorons. It was clever and it was memorized.

I had someone tell my that in Leno's monologue he referring to Emails of people threatening not to watch any more. Then he stated he had Micheal Moore on and the same thing happened, that he was a fiscal conservative and a bit of a social liberal and that we should all be willing to let people say what they want to from all sides.

Friend thought that speech was why George never went at her and why things were civil.
