Hopping on the wrong subway turned into a ride from hell yesterday for a young tourist and his girlfriend - when the man was savagely stabbed by a knife-wielding maniac on a train in Harlem, cops said.
The nightmare assault left bloodied victim Christopher McCarthy, 21, of Houston, Texas, in intensive care at St. Luke's Hospital with serious chest wounds.
McCarthy, his girlfriend, Ganda Krisananuwatara, 20, of Dallas, and a pal who is also from Texas, got lost after heading in the wrong direction on the subway.
Cops said that at about 3:30 p.m., the sightseers hopped on a southbound C train at West 135th Street.
The friends, who had just come from visiting a museum, were sitting in the middle of the last car along with four or five other people.
A man - dressed all in black - entered at 116th Street and sat down across the aisle from them, authorities said.
At 110th Street, "he got up to leave. And then he stabbed my boyfriend," said Krisananuwatara, a photographer and student.
"I didn't see the knife, it was so fast. I thought he was punched."
The attacker repeatedly plunged his knife into the right side of McCarthy's chest.
A cop told her it might have been a gang initiation because "he didn't say anything" before, during or after the attack.

Putting "Bloomberg's New York" in the title is as disingenuous as putting "Bush's America" in the title.
Get off the cheap politics. I bet your the first to decry the "drive-by media" too.
Do you live in New York City? I do. Bloomberg's neglect of subway security during both of his terms has been disgraceful.
Another stabbing this morning on the F train at Rockefeller Center. Heard it driving in.
How long before NYC completely destroys all the great things Rudy did and fully embraces the retro style Koch/Dinkins strategy of ignoring crime?
I'm glad I decided not to move back there.
2nd subway stabbing in 12 hours...
http://www.1010wins.com/pages/46013.php
Around 4 a.m. Wednesday, a man waiting with a friend on a platform at the Rockefeller Center subway station in midtown Manhattan was stabbed twice in the stomach, apparently during a robbery, police said.
The man, who was not immediately identified, was taken to the hospital in stable condition, police said. Authorities were looking for the male assailant, who fled after the stabbing.
Just heard the same thing on Curtis and the Commie -770abc.
This is simple. Make stabbing people illegal.
Bloomberg has decided to take the David Dinkins approach to subway security. He has let the gang members take over the subways after they get out of "school". And late night, he has let the maniacs take over. Rudy knew that the most important times to police the subway was after school and in the middle of the night. But Bloomberg has decided to surrender those times of day to the criminals, and only provide adequate security during the crowded rush hours.
This is Bloomberg we're talking about. His approach will be to ban all knives within city limits.
Rash of stabbings?
Yeah, and prevent people in other cities from having knives lest they decide to travel to NYC to cause trouble.
I believe the incident occurred in 1989 and that the family was from Salt Lake City. The young man who died, whose name I think was Brian Watkins, was protecting his mother from robbers, who stabbed him in the heart.
The Utah tourist that was stabbed and killed on the midtown subway protecting his family from a Queens gang was Brian Watkins and it took place during Dinkins' "Summer of Blood" in 1990. I believer there were almost 20 murders in the subway and 2,245 murders for the entire year in 1990.
Security looking for the wrong kind of "rag" and not paying attention to our own.
September of 1990, Brian Watkins was stabbed to death attempting to protect his family during a mugging. Dinkins was indeed the mayor. (A truly incompetent man.)

Just hop on the subway and stab someone and your in the gang...
