In the controversy over Ann Coulter's comments about the group of 9/11 widows, there is one critical question, from the point of view of ensuring standards of accuracy in the media. How does Coulter know it to be true that, "I've never seen people enjoying their husbands' deaths so much." There is no evidence whatsoever that those women enjoyed their husbands' deaths, and Coulter offers none. The only "evidence" for this preposterous and hurtful claim is that the women became activists and sought the media spotlight and took a political position at odds with that of Coulter. But what does that prove?
I think Coulter probably would have been correct to say that the women appeared to enjoy the media attention. You don't go on these shows unless you enjoy them to some degree. But enjoying a death? And the death of a loved one when fatherless children were left behind? Coulter's comments are not only false but cruel. She has also made other disparaging personal comments about the women.
In journalism, facts and truth are supposed to matter. Opinions are allowed, and Coulter, a columnist for Human Events and many other newspapers, is entitled to her own opinions.
SNIP
If the matter only involved personal opinions about people or things, Coulter's comments wouldn't really be newsworthy or significant. But she is claiming to have inside knowledge of the personal psychology of this group of women who lost their husbands on 9/11. That is why the comments have generated so much outrageexcept from a few conservatives unwilling to criticize her.
(Excerpt) Read more at aim.org ...
I should clarify my comments then. I do not criticize Ann Coulter. Instead I support her. She's right on target as far as I am concerned.
When the lift criticizes her, I dismiss it.
I read almost nothing of this thread and thought your original comment was okay, as it didn't imply a break with Coulter in the context in which I read it.
Well said.
Exactly.
Her arguement/position is totally correct, but she blew it with her over-zealous cruelty and poor taste.
Somebody call the WAAAAAAAAAAHmbulance.
You should know.
Gentle readers behold a tiny fraction of Sinkspur's endless spew about Ann Coulter.
He dislikes her because she gets "too personal."

Ann's not a conservative. She's a mercenary who uses conservatism as a means to fund her material existence.
To be more exact, there is no person, deficiency, handicap, or sorrow that she will not use to further her money-grubbing. She is, in fact, doing the very thing she accuses Kristen Breitweiser of doing: exploiting the "tragedy" of widows to ridicule them, put words in the mouths of their dead husbands, and suggest that they exploit themselves in Playboy.
They're all younger than Ann, all have children, and all had a husband, once, while Coulter goes home to her exquisitely furnished townhome in Manhattan where there are no children laughing, and no man to spoil her perfectly planned life. Thank God for Ann Coulter ^

In Coulter's case, she would rather have a $1.5 million Manhattan townhouse and a $1.8 million Palm Beach mansion than an obscure marriage with an obscure man and obscure children in an obscure neighborhood.
It strains credulity that she was forced into her present position. She loves the attention, and loves the money, and will resort to trashing the marriages of men who died in the twin towers if she can keep her two loves flowin' like a river. Stop Ann Coulter Before She Bombs Again ^

I really enjoy how much attention that line is getting, and the myopic press chooses not to focus on the argument Ann is making.
The reason? Because she's accurate.
I've never seen the press enjoy the focus on these widows and their husband's deaths so much.
If this guy wants to take on accuracy in the media, he should be more accurate in who and what he targets.

Imputing things to other people when you don't know what the hell you're talking about only makes YOU look stupid.
I would point out the decay that has already taken place. In our effort to be "decent," when the opposition holds no such qualms about invective, we have surrendered quite a bit of ground.
I agree that it is unfortunate that we lost decorum in this country, but we ought not bring hor d'vour toothpicks to knife fights. And we ought recognize that complaining about the knives will not hold sway over those who have already bought into the lies.
Ann is laughing all the way to the bank. Well deserved laughter, too.

What considerations of "decency" to the Leftist fanatics *deserve* in your book? The same as everyone else? Is that it?
Personally, I don't care what "insensitive" words the totalitarians are subjected to, and I don't give a damn to don a hair shirt and pound my breast over the "feelings" of a bunch of Leftist fanatics who would like nothing better than to see this country destroyed.
The enemies of human freedom don't deserve "decency." They deserve to be ridiculed, shamed, humiliated, and completely defeated. Ann Coulter didn't go far enough in describing the totalitarian swine you protect with your "decency."
