In the controversy over Ann Coulter's comments about the group of 9/11 widows, there is one critical question, from the point of view of ensuring standards of accuracy in the media. How does Coulter know it to be true that, "I've never seen people enjoying their husbands' deaths so much." There is no evidence whatsoever that those women enjoyed their husbands' deaths, and Coulter offers none. The only "evidence" for this preposterous and hurtful claim is that the women became activists and sought the media spotlight and took a political position at odds with that of Coulter. But what does that prove?
I think Coulter probably would have been correct to say that the women appeared to enjoy the media attention. You don't go on these shows unless you enjoy them to some degree. But enjoying a death? And the death of a loved one when fatherless children were left behind? Coulter's comments are not only false but cruel. She has also made other disparaging personal comments about the women.
In journalism, facts and truth are supposed to matter. Opinions are allowed, and Coulter, a columnist for Human Events and many other newspapers, is entitled to her own opinions.
SNIP
If the matter only involved personal opinions about people or things, Coulter's comments wouldn't really be newsworthy or significant. But she is claiming to have inside knowledge of the personal psychology of this group of women who lost their husbands on 9/11. That is why the comments have generated so much outrageexcept from a few conservatives unwilling to criticize her.

Amen
One word covers it.
Rebellion!
In regard to Churchill's comments, I think I heard more protests from the left about our "trampling" his free speech and the usual nonsense about "righties don't think you can be a patriot if you question the president" than I ever heard from them condemning such evil remarks. Funny how suddenly free speech considerations are out the window now that Coulter is under the gun.
In other words, you did a lousy job.
Ann Coulter has the guts that many of our Republican senators and congresspersons do not. I'm glad somebody says it like it is and gets things stirred up for discussion.
[Hey, Peach. Nice to see you again even though we are of differing opinions on this issue.]
:o)
Why? Because the truth slipped out?
Do you think it is humanly impossible to enjoy the results of a personal tragedy?
Have you ever heard of Cindy Sheehan?
Maybe these comments are under the radar. Or maybe he's a large contributor.
Ditto, arasina.
Getting thrown out of the 9/11 Commission Hearings for screaming at Rumsfeld certainly qualifies:
>>>There is no evidence whatsoever that those women enjoyed their husbands' deaths, and Coulter offers none.
"Had these women supported the war we would have never heard of them."
I've heard of women who are out there supporting the war in opposition to those like Cindy Sheehan. For example, Deborah Johns. I think she is well-regarded by people like us. I bet you could probably find some quotes by libs criticizing her (though I wouldn't want to be the one to look for them because of the brain damage it would cause ;)
I'm really late to the discussion ... and maybe this has already been mentioned, but Ann is quite the wordsmith and she, of course, knew exactly what she was writing, and it all fits.
This is one of the most quoted/misquoted segments:
"These broads are millionaires, lionized on TV and in articles about them, reveling in their status as celebrities and stalked by grief-arazzis. I have never seen people enjoying their husband's death so much."
Enjoying:
1. To receive pleasure or satisfaction from
2. To have the use or benefit of
Definition number 2 fits perfectly. They have certainly used and benefited from the deaths of their husbands.
And that lovely term harpie(s):
- a predatory person : LEECH
LEECH: a hanger-on who seeks advantage or gain
Harpies they are!
If Ann wanted to make this type of point about these four women and get everybody fired up, instead of saying, "I have never seen women enjoying their husband's death so much." ............. she should have said, "I have never seen women enjoying the CELEBRITY accrued from their husband's death so much." That way she wasn't being so despicable as to say such a thing as she did about these women's personal feelings about their husbands.
She could have gotten her "needed" publicity and made her point without saying they were "enjoying their husbands' deaths."
She screwed up big time, and she will be tarred with this comment all her days........ and she deserves it.
She needs to apologize................. but she never will. She hasn't the class........ yet.
At best, her comment was foolish.
"Better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool, rather than open it and prove them right."
"What Coulter is saying is that they are enjoying the notoriety that they have actively worked to garner for themselves, from their husbands deaths"
I saw a show, I think Law and Order, that portrayed a group of 9/11 widows in this way. No one complained then.
I cannot believe her despicable "divorce comment" on Hannity and Colmes is basically being ignored. That was incredibly disgusting. Even Hannity was grossed out!
Not curious at all. See Capt. Zan Hornbuckle:
http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/005079.php
He had some guys wounded, but his patchwork unit of 80 men who had never trained or fought together didn't lose a man in several hours of fierce combat. Two reinforcements were killed but Hornbuckle didn't lose one man.
There have been a lot of battles against insurgents in Iraq in Afghanistan where no Americans were killed. My brother was involved in some of them. You're just inventing straw men to hang your hat on.
They were willing dupes or intentional liars when they suggested that Dr. Rice knew in advance of the attacks. That the PDB should have been released to the public so they could have reported middle eastern men in line at airports.
They exploited their loss for purposes that make no sense at all.
They ignored the truth of Ms. Gorelick's wall, the facts that X42 ignored an offer to bring OBL to justice here in the USA, etc.
Take the personal arguments off line
Are you being paid by the DNC to defend the harpies?
