CANCER HITS 283 RESCUERS OF 9/11
NY Post ^ | June 11, 2006

Posted on 06/13/2006 7:45:56 AM PDT by Grig

Since 9/11, 283 World Trade Center rescue and recovery workers have been diagnosed with cancer, and 33 of them have died of cancer, says a lawyer for the ailing responders...

Doctors say the cancers can strike three to five years after exposure to toxins such as benzene, a cancer-causing chemical that permeated the WTC site from burning jet fuel...

"We have nearly 35 of these cancers in the family of 50,000 Ground Zero workers. The odds of that occurring are one in hundreds of millions," Worby said.

I agree with you there - I don't know why there wasn't more of an impetus amongst the personnel there themselves, to use masks and breathers. I would not have trusted EPA either.

They are talking about having that many people from that small a group die of that rare of a cancer type, hence the one in hundreds of millions odds.

Silverstein. My mistake. Who is? PA of NY?

Someone is going to be sued. If the attorneys had a set they would go after Bin Laden.

The tip off was when they condemned every car covered in dust. Done very quickly and quietly. The car is totaled, here's the insurance check while they're telling people to clean off the dust in their apartments with paper towels. I mean, WTF was that about?

In terms of refining crude oil, JP-A is a middle distillate. The middle distillates include kerosene, aviation fuels, diesel fuels, and fuel oil #1 and 2. These fuels contain paraffins (alkenes), cycloparaffins (cycloalkanes), aromatics, and olefins from approximately C9 to C20. Aromatic compounds of concern included alkylbenzenes, toluene, naphthalenes, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Compositions range from avgas and JP-4, which are similar to gasoline, to Jet A and JP-8, which are kerosene-based fuels [661]. Kerosene normally has a boiling range well above the boiling-point of benzene; accordingly, the benzene content of the kerosene fraction (and therefore jet fuel A) is usually below 0.02%. However, since wide-cut jet fuels (such as jet fuel 4) are made by blending with gasoline, they may contain more benzene (normally <0.5%) [747]. Jet A is not mixed with gasoline.

All civil transports burn Jet A, the JPs are military specifically. Gasonline typically runs about 1% benzene by volume, as stated above JP 4 is mixed with gasoline at about 50%, giving it about half the benzen of gasoline. Jet A contains 1/50th of the benzene by volume as Joe Taxi driver.

The 767 used have less then 30K gallons on board, about as much as 1800 gal. of gasoline, about 60 taxi cabs with full tanks. http://www.nature.nps.gov/hazardssafety/toxic/jet_a.pdf

"I'll bet that burned very quickly and most were not exposed to it at all."

Oh no, don't you know you can get a lot of mileage from a planeload of Jet-A? even more if you're a lawyer?

to handle this properly - the same victims compensation funds should be used for these workers.

If we can make the Jersey Girls millionaires 5 times over, we can spend money to help the families of these deceased workers.

So far, all we can be sure of is that working at Ground Zero does not confer immunity to cancer.

I know enough, and my comments were directed at the unions vs Giulliani post earlier in the thread. The NYPD wanted the easy overtime to tend to Ground Zero. There was 24 hour cleanup at the site (a site that still remains undeveloped - NY dropped the ball there) and plenty of people were making plenty of money during that ambitious cleanup.

And they earned it. But the NYPD largely wanted a piece of that. These guys do a tough job but people need to be realistic: they aren't saints and they shouldn't get everything they ask for.

I personally know guys that left California for WTC and worked there. I also personally know some of the guys who ran the morgue in New Orleans.
None of them did it for money.
I stand by my statement that you know nothing about firefighters.

Your personal experience notwithstanding, the union antics that were referenced in the post had a lot to do with money.

If these numbers are accurate, it's hard to argue against a connection.

Just be glad the VA isn't doing the arguing then. To them Persian Gulf War Syndrome was just a myth while people died.

Yeah, yeah, we'll fire up the White Owls and bring up a jug of wine from the basement while we sit on our lawn chairs out front...do you think the guys at Dean & Deluca will mind?
