State legislation proposed yesterday would allow law officers to consider race and ethnicity in identifying potential terrorism suspects - a move decried by a civil rights advocate.
The bill would allow "the use of race as one of many criteria in the war on terror," said Assemb. Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn). "Suicide bombers and terrorists fit a very specific intelligence profile, and race and ethnicity is very much a part of that profile."

"Let's get real. There is a terrorist profile," Hikind said.
He said police in New York and London already are using the kind of criteria contained in the bill.

The proposed legislation would authorize law enforcement officials to "consider race and ethnicity as one of many factors that could be used in identifying persons who can be initially stopped, questioned, frisked

The proposed bill drew the wrath of Donna Lieberman, executive director of the New York Civil Liberties Union.
"Racial and ethnic profiling has been shown time and time again to be not only anathema to principles of equality, but it's bad law enforcement," she said in a telephone interview.
Lieberman likened targeting people as possible suspects based on race or ethnicity to "tactics used by the Bush administration - like the roundup of Muslims, or special registration of immigrants."

When looking for KKK members who attack a youth, is it OK to look for white males?
I find it somewhat annoying that this even needs to be legislated on. Once upon a time there was this thing called common sense.

You mean no more searching Norwegan nuns or eight year old children? Sounds like a "risky scheme" to me. I mean Canada found no connection to Islam with the 17 they arrested for planning bombings. Better clear this with Norm Minetta and Jesse Jackson first!
Forget that profiling may actually catch some terrorists, we have to be "fair".
Or to look for PRs who attack people during the PR day parade? Hey, maybe it was granny.
My outlook here is pessimistic ... NY is the heart of PC Darkness.
No we are going for Swedes now.
Actually, I think all are agreed that blue-eyed blond Norwegians and red-haired Irishmen should not be excluded. (Sarcsm)
People in fields like this need to act on gut feelings and instinct, anything that interferes with that, puts a degree of separation between them and the people they are studying for possible examination.
What good is experience if you can't act on the undefinable talents you have acquired?
Exactly. Political correctness has stood in the way of reason and logic for too long. And, this is far too important to allow some stupid feel-good policy to interfere with public safety.
If I was in Mexico, and a crime was committed by a white person, I would not be shocked nor 'offended' if they questioned me. It's common sense.
Thank the Warren Court for the abandonment of common sense in law enforcement.
The Warren Court was perhaps the most Activist Court in the Suprem Court's history; we can blame the Warren Court for problems which extend far beyond the abandonment of common sense in law enforcement.
Amen.
God put Earl Warren on earth to get a unanimous decision on Brown.
