whatever. As long as there is a quick way for employers to verify legal status.

Nothing new here, move along.
All this does is stop criminals from using your SS number to get a job. Try explaining to the IRS why you did not report the income from your other full time jobs in California, Colorado, and Iowa (you live in Florida)!
We already have a national ID, it is called a drivers license.

In one form or another, we WILL have a national ID. Probably sooner rather than later.

I've been carrying a "national ID card" since the 11th of April, 1969. Never had a problem yet.
To: umgud
I have never understood the fuss over a National ID. We have 2 already, Social Security and your state driver's license.
To: NormsRevenge
"Think National ID card."
Already have it. You need a SS number for many transactions and a drivers license for many more. The government and private agencies already know just about everything there is to know about us. The horse is already out of the barn.
At this stage, I am not against an ID scheme that actually might be beneficial to the average citizen for a change.

A 2004 agency report found that erroneous non-confirmations for foreign born workers was "unacceptably high'' and "higher than desirable'' for U.S.-born workers.
This sentence makes no sense. What's the "for U.S.-born workers" part doing there?

The use your SS# for everything in the book now.
It's my medicare#, my pilots licence#, every bank or financial institution demands and uses it, insurance and doctors use it, there's no privacy about your information now.
My SS# is probably known to 100 people for everyone that I know of.

I would guess that a lot of people working 2 jobs are using 2 names and SS#s, filing 2 tax returns on low paying jobs, getting double earned income tax credits and hoping to someday retire with 2 SS checks.

After the Real ID Act kicks in, the state issued drivers licenses or ID's (in compliance with the Act) will become default national ID's. It will then be easy to start requiring them for many functions.

The National ID will become mandatory for anyone who wants to work. And after the "no work" list gains acceptance, other provisions will be added to the list later, such as no purchasing or selling without the ID. Of course, the best provision for enforcement would be to tattoo the ID on peoples forehead or the back of their hand. /last days paranoia

We already have a national ID, it is called a drivers license. A drivers license is not a requirement. I know lots of people without a drivers license.

Why not simply verify SS# ? We already have enough ID in place.
