ROME - The trial of Italian author and veteran
journalist Oriana Fallaci,
accused of defaming Islam in a 2004 book, opened Monday in northern Italy
and was quickly adjourned, a lawyer said.
(snip)
Last year, a judge ordered Fallaci to stand trial on charges of violating
an Italian law that prohibits "outrage" to religion.
(snip)
In "The Strength of Reason," Fallaci accuses Europe of having sold its soul
to what she describes as an Islamic invasion.

charged that some passages in Fallaci's book, "The Strength of Reason," were offensive to Islam. His lawyer cited a phrase from the book that refers to Islam as "a pool ... that never purifies."I'd like to be put on record that this is a very accurate description of islam, and I agree with it 100%. Anyone wanna sue me?

No, but I'd like to take your case.
I am well armed, have plenty of ammo, love extermination work, and have a lot of time to kill.

The offense with which she is charged carries a fine of up to $7,500.She'll get substantially more than $7,500 in free publicity for her books from this sham of a trial.

Yes.
And I suspect the generally muted (IMHO) reportage of the trial
shows the biases (or lack of courage?) of the MSM.
What wacko liberal wants to publicize the persecution of an aged lady
that's simply speaking "an inconvenient truth" out loud?
Or get beheaded or knifed (like Theo van Gogh) for expressing an
opinion on Islam?

Thanks for the ping. The New Yorker had a great interview with OF but they don't permit us to even post a link.

Looks like the AP has goofed again. The correct title of her latest book is, "The Force of Reason." My copy was delivered 2 weeks ago.

Hello, Everyone:
I'm seeking clarification on this. Isn't the law that Fallaci is being charged under about offenses against any religion, not just Islam? The issue might be larger than the intolerance of Islam or any religion, but rather the European restrictions on what most Americans would think is a free speech issue.

Could you insult Catholicism without any fear of prosecution, but have to hire a lawyer as soon as you say anything about Islam?

That may be one issue at work here.
I'm no lawyer and have no insight into Italian jurisprudence.
But it will be interesting to see if the number of lawsuits by Muslims
outraged over pretexts (ranging from non-existent to great) greatly
outnumber those of i.e., outraged Catholics over what is said in
mosques and the popular press.
