Got it. Indian farming practices good, white man practices bad. Interesting science though.

Jefferson was an avid farmer and gardener. Growing wheat was probably one of his experiments. He has journals filled with new varieties of plants and nursery stock that grew, or attempted to grow. He even tried olive trees, but it was too cold in Virginia.

I watched a PBS show on Monticello. He had a section on one side leveled and stockaded. The narration indicated that this was probably to prevent the slaves from stealing-which is a slam on both the slaves and Jefferson--but since I probably have more experience with gardens than that show's writers (or less political bias) I would say it was probably to keep the deer, rabbits, and raccoons out.
