Ann Coulter Banned in New Jersey?
Two New Jersey Democrats are pushing to have Ann Coulter's new book "Godless: The Church of Liberalism," banned from all bookstores in their state because she criticized four 9/11 widows known as "the Jersey Girls."
In a joint press release issued Friday, New Jersey Assemblywomen Joan Quigley and Linda Stender say they want New Jersey retailers to "ban the sale of [Coulter's] book throughout the state."
"Ann Coulter's criticism of 9-11 widows, whose only desire since the attacks have been to repair their shattered lives and protect other families from the horrors they have experienced, is motivated purely by petty greed and hate," the two Democrats complained.
"Coulter's vicious characterizations and remarks are motivated by greed and her desire to sell books . . . She is a leech trying to turn a profit off perverting the suffering of others."
Quigley and Stender conclude:
"No one in New Jersey should buy this book and allow Ann Coulter to profit from her hate-mongering. We are asking New Jersey retailers statewide to stand with us and express their outrage by refusing to carry or sell copies of Coulter's book. Her hate-filled attacks on our 9-11 widows has no place on New Jersey bookshelves."

Yes, but perhaps the PRC version of Google is all that is allowed to operate in the state on the net.

But, all they are doing is asking booksellers to not carry the book. They are not doing anything from a governmental/legal point. Technically, they are asking for this as "private citizens" (but using their postitions in government to garner publicity).
So, as long as there is no law or offical government edict demanding Ann's books be removed, there is no violation of free speech as far as the Constitution is concerned. There is nothing in the Constitution that says a reseller has to carry Ann's book.
Of course this only highlights the left's postition on the right to speak your mind. If the left says it, it is "free speech". If the right says it, it's "hate mongering".
well, i think that's obvious when it's pulled completely out of context, however, wonder what the next book will be like....will it simply be more of the same or taking it to the next step?....if everyone's been there done that, what will interest them?

I don't believe in slippery slope arguments. Something is either right or wrong.
The government officials can ask that private retailers ban books. Government officials can't use police powers to harass.
And no one forces me to pay my income taxes.
That's what I think. Although, I consider what they are doing is asking bookstores not to carrying or offer the book for sale.

I respectfully disagree. Government officials can make life a living hell for businesses which upset them. Suggesting a boycott is one thing, but to suggest to businesses that they "ban" something is a chilling suggestion. You just had a cigar explode in your face.

Your slippery slope argument is false. Government officials have every right of free speech to advocate voluntary actions by private citizens. Governments don't have a right to harass private citizens.

Aside from the fact that this is gut-wrenchingly funny at its core, from another perspective, it is also extremely disturbing. This is clear proof of how far we have gone from our Constitutional, freedom-loving core as a nation. The leftists continue to sow the seeds of division in this country on the basis of political rhetoric and, when called on it, they put on their Little Orphan Annie face and claim that the Republicans did it all; they are just trying to "represent the little people who have no voice".
There is no lie that the leftists won't tell and no action they won't take to undermine this nation and this president. Until they regain their "power", they cannot and will not see the big picyure and accept responsibility for the damage they are doing to this nation, or the suppoprt they are providing to our enemies. In concert with a willing media, they are proving President Lincoln's words all too true - we will never be conquered by any enemy from without the United States. Instead, our defeat will come from within. The Dems are working hard to make that a reality.
I tend to agree with you. However, these ladies remind me of Ron White. They had the right to remain silent, but did not have the ability. Thus proving they are either drunk or stupid.
Oh, PLEASE let them introduce some legislation! But they won't... Even idiot legislators in NJ probably know that it would violate the First Amendment of the Constitution... I noticed that they said that "retailers should ban the sale."
Still, If I were Ann's publicity people, I'd be promoting her book with "Banned in New Jersey?" headlines!
