Barbaro stronger all the time; ESPN/ABC to feature Barbaro during coverage of Belmont Stakes
June 9, 2006
KENNETT SQUARE, PA Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro continues to please veterinarians at the George D. Widener Hospital for Large Animals with his progress on this day before the running of the finale of horse racings Triple Crown. Barbaro is recovering from a shattered hind leg sustained at the Preakness on May 20 , and remains in intensive care at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicines New Bolton Center.
Though Barbaro wont be at the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, June 10, current plans for airing the race on ESPN (noon until 5 p.m.) and on ABC Wide World of Sports (5 p.m.7 p.m.) include live shots of Barbaro in his stall.

There is no question it would have been great to see Preakness champ Bernardini and a healthy Barbaro in Saturdays 138th running of the Grade 1, $1 million Belmont Stakes. With those two stars absent however, the oldest, longest and last leg of the Triple Crown is as competitive as could be with a big field of a dozen three-year-olds trying to get a mile and a half.
Todd Pletcher, the Eclipse Award-winning trainer the last two years, has never won a Triple Crown race. His combined record in the Belmont, Kentucky Derby and Preakness is 0-2-2 from 19 starters, not what would be expected for a trainer as good as he is. That could all change Saturday though as it appears Pletcher, who turns 39 later this month, has two of the horses to beat in the Belmont with Bluegrass Cat and Sunriver.
The Belmont Stakes, the Test of the Champion, is race 11 on a 13-race card that begins at noon EDT. Post time for the Belmont, which will serve as the final leg of $1 million guaranteed all-stakes pick four and pick six pools, is 6:33 p.m. Six graded races will be run on Saturday with combined purses of $2.4 million. Some of those races can be seen on ESPN from noon to 5 p.m. ABC will take over coverage at 5 p.m. showing the Manhattan and Belmont Stakes before wrapping up their telecast at 7 p.m. All of the stakes races will be shown live.
WinStar Farms Bluegrass Cat is the morning line favorite for the 138th Belmont. He comes off a runner-up effort in the Kentucky Derby where he was 6 ½ lengths behind Barbaro at the finish, going off at odds of 30-1.
After establishing himself as one of the leading three-year-olds, fans were quick to forget about Bluegrass Cat following an odds-on loss to Deputy Glitt... ...more
Just won't have the thrill and appeal without sweet Barbaro .. who are we rooting for? Who's got the human interest story?
Thanks for the thread Hair! Great graphics. There's coverage on ESPN right now.
A couple of the FReeper betters discussed their choices this morning here: Saturday Morning Line at the Belmont.
Of course much of the talk is about Barbaro still.
Well, the graphics I steal from the official site for the most part :~) But I like to have the silk colors and a photo in front of me to tell who's who during the race.
Uh-oh. "Bob and John" is the one I mentioned before the KY Derby because he's owned by a local here, Bob McNair, who also owns the Houston Texans of the NFL (they're supposedly a football team).
That was not a good recommendation, lol - although I continue to hear good things about the horse.
Heh... they were just talking about him here... said he doesn't like being crowded and bumped.
Have they shown the gigantic "get well" card for Barbaro on ESPN? I don't have that channel. Supposedly, Edgar Prado was going to be the first to sign it and that would kick off the "tributes" to Barbaro all during the Belmont coverage.
Yeah - they have. They just did an update on Barbaro a bit ago and showed that.
Just a little trivia for the bettors and the watchers of the Belmont. Oh So Awesome is owned by a syndicate, Team Valor. One of the partners in this syndicate is Mark Belling, conservative talk show host in Milwaukee and frequent chair-warmer for El Rushbo. Mark will be at the race today.
That horse is such an inspiration. To think he would be doing this well after that horror we all saw in the Derby. I still look for updates on him every couple of days!
Why does this crack me up...?
I think Bob and John has a good chance today. I also like Sacred Light, though he is a long shot. I have respect for his trainer. He must think his horse has some talent. He wouldn't have entered him in the race, or gone to the expense of shipping him to NY, if he didn't think something was possible.
We're a funny society, that's why :~)
We've been adding updates on Barbaro on this thread every few days:

I also wanted to add a sad story while all you horsey people are here in one place, in case you didn't catch it.
This week, six prize racehorse stallions were killed in a stable fire in Hondo, NM. At least one of them was a thoroughbred, maybe two. The rest are well known quarter horses, one owned by Toby Keith, named The Down Side.
There was an excellent story in one of the horse publications about all the offspring of these six and all their wins and prize money - it was a huge total, but now I can't find it again, so here are some of the horse details from an AP story:
" ... Among the former race horses were Favorite Trick, the 1997 Horse of the Year as a 2-year-old; Fredricksburg, last year's Quarter Horse Racing Champion Aged Stallion; The Down Side, the winner of the 2003 Champion of Champions-G1; and Saratoga Six, which was undefeated in his sole year of racing.
...
Favorite Trick raced through age 3 and retired with a dozen wins from 16 starts and earnings of $1.7 million. Fredricksburg retired with seven wins and earnings of $369,302.
The Down Side raced in a partnership between track owner R.D. Hubbard and Toby Keith won six of nine starts and earned $361,792.
The two other horses killed in the fire were Southern Cartel and 12-year-old Gone Hollywood. ..."

The property is owned by RD Hubbard, who also owns the track at Ruidoso.
Gee - thanks for the info... If you have something to say about racing or gambling, try just ~saying it~ don't spam the thread with a big ole copy paste no one is going to read.
Nice cut and paste job. Care to state your point?
