An eerie quiet has descended over the past week on Fulton Street, a stretch of weather-beaten apartment buildings in eastern Linda Vista that is home to a large number of recent immigrants, some of them legal residents, others not.
Some people have skipped work. Others have skipped doctor appointments. Children are walking to school more frequently by themselves, neighbors say, because their parents are afraid to accompany them outside.
“Today the migra was here,” explained Jose Cardenas, 30, one of those here legally, on a gray afternoon this week when the sidewalks were empty and the street deserted save for passing cars. “People hide, and they don't come out.”
Last Thursday, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in San Diego launched a six-day special operation to seek out immigration fugitives or “absconders” who have failed to comply with deportation orders, haven't shown up at immigration hearings or have committed a deportable offense.
It was part of a stepped-up nationwide effort since last fall to target an estimated 590,000 immigration fugitives in the United States, about 5,400 of whom are thought to reside in the San Diego area.

I read this article in the paper this morning, with my usual cup of coffee. Golly gee, my coffee sure tastes great this morning!
I'm still smiling! Keep it up : )
In our area of KS, Senator Sam Brownback's offices have been having daily drop offs of bricks.
In fact, one friend emailed me about how she went to a large toy distributor and was able to purchase one case of fake bricks.
She purchased them and split up the case, then mailed the contents to Brownback's Topeka, Wichita, Overland Park and D.C. offices.
I've started a process that I hope will help send the border jumpers home.
When I see a work truck with Hispanics in it, I look to see if there is a company name on the truck. If so, I call the company and ask them if all of their workers are legal. I usually get an angry response and have been hung up on.
However, I've got a plan to step up my efforts and become more efficient. I'm gonna make a list of questions and start documenting the responses in addition to calling INS on companies that provide insufficient information. I also plan to enter the results into a database and post it on the web.
Anybody interested in joining this effort? Is there already a ping list on FR for something like this and if not is there enough interest to generate one?
I hope the employers reminded their illegals that they could be replaced in a half an hour.
In Mesa, Arizona, yesterday my children got off a bus to see a few people with U.S. flags and anti-illegal signs. It took a few seconds to realize what looked different, but there were no illegals waiting near that intersection.
I want the border secured ASAP! If Bush refuses to secure the border, then he is inviting the criticism. Even worse, he is partnering with John McCain and Ted Kennedy! That alliance doesn't give you pause?
Border security and sovereignty will be my #1 issue when voting in November. I will stay home or vote third party before voting for any RINOs that support amnesty.
Linda Vista LV (little Vietnam) My old stomping grounds.
LOL -- oh that is priceless.
INS.
Most of LV is a third world neighborhood
just as city heights.
I am fed up with some threads who want to hear just happy talk and no illegal talk.
This is another front on the war on terror and some of those in flyover country who haven't made it to the big city need to get real.
LV has been a mess for years.
BUMP your comments.
You hit it. Add in the thousands in that neighborhood from the Horn of Africa, Viet Nam, etc.
ping
Melting pot or dumpster?
That's sickening, but oh too true.
And they wonder why we don't want them.
They bring their third world ways with them and they refuse to asimilate.
They have turned regular neighborhoods into trash holes.
I can't figure how they can afford to live here.
40 to a house, I guess.
Thanks for the ping! I agree with your comments completely! We need to secure our borders and we are truly another front on the WOT!
