Suffolk Jury Looks Into Issue of Dual Voting by Second-Home Owners (including Geraldine A. Ferraro)
NY Times ^ | June 10, 2006 | BRUCE LAMBERT and JULIA C. MEAD

A Suffolk County grand jury subpoenaed election records for Saltaire on Fire Island yesterday after complaints that some summer residents had voted illegally by casting ballots there and in the communities where they live most of the year, county officials said.

Prosecutors declined to comment. But critics of the village government have accused several people of dual voting, including Geraldine A. Ferraro, the former Democratic vice presidential nominee, and her husband, John A. Zaccaro Sr.

Voting records bear out those assertions.

For decades Ms. Ferraro has voted regularly in her hometown, New York City, but since 2001, she and her husband have also voted in the spring village elections in Saltaire, where they have had a summer home for 42 years, records show.

State law forbids anyone to be an active voter in two different places, and violators can face criminal prosecution, say election officials and other legal experts. "Maintaining two voting residences is a violation of the law and a criminal violation," said Henry T. Berger, a lawyer and specialist in election law.

Ms. Ferraro adamantly denied in a telephone interview yesterday that she and her husband had broken the law, and she questioned the accuracy of the records. She did acknowledge that they had voted in village elections, saying it was permitted by special registration at Village Hall.

"We have voted in the village the way everybody else does. The only requirement is you have to have lived there 30 days before the election. If that's illegal, the village should not have those registration days," said Ms. Ferraro, a lawyer.

Ms. Ferraro and her husband are not the only ones to have voted in two places where they have homes.

One village trustee, Bruce A. Rich, has acknowledged also voting in Manhattan, where he lives and works as...

Come on, we're talking Democrats here. Nothing will be done about it.

They're prosecuting Ann Coulter for voting in another Florida precinct. What the hey - in New York, these are Democrats we're talking about. Besides, the party wants the felon vote.

Oh, I'm convinced huge numbers of New Yorkers are voting up there in NY and also down here in Orange, Broward and Palm Beach counties.

The trick is getting the records to match things up. Maybe just in time to stir the pot this year and 2008.

Happens here in PHX too, and we more then double our population here, man, there literally is a Drug store every 500 feet, often four square on a corner AND then 2 or three more in the grocery store on this same corner.
Gotta love them here, mostly WWII vets, but they are getting so old now we are seeing less and less. Now we get load mouthed new yorkers that are probably voting in both places. Change of guard, the ones that are 55 to 60 are baby boomers, and man oh man are we going to be in trouble for a long time to come. Now they all vote dems for all the free handouts and because hey are old hippies and draft dodgers now not war heros.

Oh BELIEVE ME....They are still here, only this time they get to vote for Queen Hillary, and Mr.(I've got an STS-16 patch, and you won't have to look at an oil rig from your condo if I'm re-elected) Bill Nelson...

What I hate about the election laws is that I'm required to vote in the district I live in, despite the fact that I own a Business in another district that has far more effect on my life than the district I live in.

I pay ten times more taxes where my business is, yet I have no voice on who is elected in that district

They're probably not all Democrats. One person, James McCann, supported the Republican mayor of Irvington in a tie election, then cast the deciding vote in the Saltaire village election in the same year. Talk about your vote counting!

There IS a common denominator here - all these people are fairly rich if they can afford houses in Manhattan or Westchester and a summer home on Fire Island.

Actually I think you should be able to vote in the local elections in both places.

You shouldn't get two votes for the same candidate but you should get a vote for the local government where you own property.

Denying you the vote is taxation without representation.

I own property in two different towns/cities. I pay property taxes in both. I should have a say about those who tax me. I don't understand why that hasn't been challenged and won.

It really is a flaw in our system

If they checked the voter logs of any downstate county of New York against Palm Beach County, Florida alone, they would have a field day.

ex-Broward here

NJ & NY had many thousands of Florida voters in 2000, 2003, 2004, 2006

Documented in the papers too

In Florida illegals were bragging on TV they voted

Thousands of ex-cons voted in Florida too - over 75% voted democrat

Dems in FL got all upset with "roll-cleansing"

Hillary is pushing the con & ex-con vote bigtime

75% is 75%

The party of convicted criminals

Who vote!

My fix:

Any pol, clerk, ACORNer, etc who registers an illegal, ex-con, or double-voter does 5 years in fed pen (no parole!) 1st offense

2nd offense = 10 years

2 in first year = 15 years

5 + 10 / back-to-back (as they say)

The preoblem is compounded in a state like Maryland where you do not need PROOF of residency to vote. A utility bill will do it. You can get a drivers license in Maryland the same way. MARYLAND IS A CORRUPT DEMOCRAT FORTRESS.

Huh? Democrats voting TWICE? I'm shocked, SHOCKED, I tell you!

And by the way, I'd love to see some serious investigation of the New Yorkers who flee to FLORIDA every year. I'm betting Florida would be a lot more RED if there wasn't any dual voting going on by the winter-time 'rats who migrate down there every year!

Voter fraud ought to be treated as a crime against the state, like treason, and prosecuted accordingly. If we did that, we'd have a lot less of it.
