Can you believe this? I just got a letter in the mail from Allnative about my tobacco products that I order.
"Effective immediately, AllNative.com, as well as many other cigarette retailers around the country, is being forced by the major credit card companies (Discover, MasterCard, Visa, and American Express) to eliminate credit and debit card purchases for cigarettes and other tobacco products. We were notified on Friday, May 19th that they were "pulling the plug" immediately with no time for us to notify our customers."
When did this country go communist? This is freaking nuts. I called AllNative and they said something about the Attorney General putting pressure on the credit card companies not to allow internet based tobacco companies to allow credit or debit cards. My credit card company thought I was out of my mind when I asked about this...they had no clue what I was talking about.
So, who is blowing smoke?
I was in Iowa last month and bought Camel Lights for $2.65/ pack. They're close to $4.00/ pack here in the Twin Cities. Next time I go down there I'm going to bring 2 grand in cash and fill the trunk of my car with smokes. I figure I can mark them up 75 cents a pack and sell them to people at work.
The federal courts, including the US Supreme Court, have ruled that these sales can be taxed because they are made to non-Indians.
Furthermore, why should Indian owned businesses have greater privileges, based on race, than white owned businesses?
rollyourown.com and stuffyourown.com
Used them for well over a year. Never a problem.
Roll your own for a buck a pack.
Happened to senecasmokes.com as well. Thankfully, I was RYO before they went belly-up.
ping
I use JR and Thompson. I hear different laws apply to cigars.
Would like to apologize to all Freepers for NYS again screwing it up for the rest of the country!
"Roll your own for a buck a pack."
Excellent advice.
Get a good machine and the pre made tubes and you can roll a pack in about 20 minutes.
Screw the Feds and the State and their exorbitant taxes.
$1.00 per pack is about what it costs me.
Around here that saves about $25.00 per carton.
We use a humidor to keep the tobacco from drying out too much.
I believe it all started in New York with that wacko attorney general/Govenor-want-to-be.
Hey all you non-smokers who want to offer advice like "quit smoking," and are saying boohoo, too bad, because you don't smoke?
Just wait!
Today, its smokes--tomorrow, its your printer cartridge; your camera; your jewelry; whatever.
ITS ALL ABOUT MONEY---TAXES!!!!
In Maine they are calling it a "use tax."
Eventually we will be bringing back the barter system.
"They're close to $4.00/ pack here in the Twin Cities"
Over five bucks a pack here in Taxachusetts.
We've got forty-five cents a gallon total tax on gas, too, it's fantastic!!!
Do that and drive to NY/NJ. It's $6.50-$7.50 a pack in this area.
FINALLY, this week, my wife went on the patch and hasn't had any since Sunday! Hurray! I havn't smoked (cept a cheater once in a while after I've had too many beers) in over a year.
I think bartering is also illegal. The goods exchanged are income. Face it, average joe blow can't get ahead on a damn thing. If they do, government quickly figures out a way to tax it.
Wrong (and right). Bartering is legal, but you're supposed to report the value of the transactions as income.
Elliot Spitzer did it.
That is what I meant but you said it better.
Putz. Not simply on the basis of this, just a general comment about the guy.
I agree.
Please note that as of Tuesday, March 14, 2006 New York State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer has forced us to close our Internet Smoke Shop.
For more information concerning orders please call us at 1-800-339-2940 Monday-Friday 8am-7pm(EST) and we will be happy to answer all inquires.
