Preschool tax fails in California
Every one has a breaking point when it comes to tax hikes. Tuesday, Californians soundly defeated a tax increase to pay for universal preschool. According to San Diego television station KFMB:
"Proposition 82, the universal preschool measure, was also defeated, as 61 percent voted no compared to 39 percent that approved the measure. Proposition 82 would have spent $2.1 billion during the first year, increasing to $2.6 billion by 2010. The measure, conceived by actor Rob Reiner, would have provided hundreds of millions of dollars for Los Angeles and would have allowed credentialed teachers to educate some 150,000 four-year-olds living in the city."
It's not terribly surprising that the measure went down (okay, it is a little), but the margin of defeat is striking. Remember, this was sold as a tax on the super-rich. The money was to be raised by a 1.7% tax increase on individuals who earn over $400,000 a year or couples who earn over $800,000. Still, sixty-one percent of the voters said "no thanks."
California is home to a lot of rich people (one-fifth of the nation's billionaires), yet millions of middle class voters opposed a preschool program that would have been paid for by the rich. That's quite a message to the tax-and-spenders.

I still can't figure out if prop 81 passed.
And damn proud to be one of those who helped vote them down!!
Cheers,

Let's repharase that to what it really means
would have provided hundreds of millions of dollars for Los Angeles would have seized hundreds of millions of dollars from hard working taxpayers and would have allowed credentialed teachers to educate would have provided even more sinecures for techers union members
As far as Rob Reiner goes, look at the South Park episode "Butt Out" for a very charitable view of that fat a$$hole.
Prop 81 Failed
Yup...feels great to vote down a liberal attempt to gouge even more money.
Thank you.
Nothing like the smell of roasting meathead in the morning, it smells like, like victory.
Yeehah!
A lot of folks want to eventually earn $400,000 a year.
It was another vote against illegal immigration, trust me. I live in L.A.
Huh? Nope, it was about 45-55 within the first hour of reporting and never varied much from that.
BTW, Santa Clara County (San Jose, Sunnyvale, i.e., a part of Silicon Valley) pretty soundly rejected a half-cent local increase in sales tax as well. It really is a sea change from the bad old days when every tax increase and bond issue passed by 65-35 or so.
Good point, with illegal alien children and anchor babies meathead's classroom would be mostly non-citizens.
Now they need to see the same change in the voting for members of the US Congress. Time to say by by to the likes of Barbara Boxer, Nancy Pelosi and a host of other public servants, who have risen to positions far higher than their servant status could ever imagine.
And here comes Angeledes for the November election, whose
only policy is to raise taxes, raise taxes, and again, raise
taxes. looks like Schwarzenegger is a shoo-in if he doesn,t
screw up.
Prop 81 FAILED. 53%-47%. Margin of about 250,000 votes
Gives me hope that California may one day wrench itself out of the liberal toilet before the swirling socialist waters sweep it away.
