He died after he mumbled something, military spokesman says WASHINGTON - A mortally wounded Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, still alive after a U.S. airstrike on his hideout, mumbled briefly and attempted to turn away off the stretcher he had been placed on by Iraqi police, the U.S. military said Friday.
U.S. officials had said Thursday in announcing the attack that Zarqawi was dead when U.S. troops arrived on the scene.
Maj. Gen. Bill Caldwell, briefing military reporters at the Pentagon from his post in Baghdad, said he learned after getting briefings Friday that Zarqawi was alive when Iraqi police first arrived on the scene, but he died a short time later.
We did in fact see him alive, Caldwell said. He mumbled a little something but it was indistinguishable and it was very short.
Asked whether al-Zarqawi was shot after U.S. ground troops arrived, Caldwell said he could not give a definitive answer based on what he had read in the latest official U.S. military report on the event. Ill go back and specifically ask that, he said. But no, there was nothing in the report that said he had received any wounds from some kind of weapons system like that.
Al-Zarqawis safehouse was destroyed by two 500-pound bombs launched from an Air Force F-16 on Wednesday evening.
Autopsy performed Caldwell said the U.S. military was still compiling some details of the event, including the exact amount of time Zarqawi was alive after the attack. He said an initial analysis of al-Zarqawis body had been done but he was not certain whether it constituted a full autopsy.

Guessing that he mumbled, "Bitch set me up"
"He died after he mumbled something,"
Where are my virgins? Why is it getting hotter?
"Can you please tell the FR Mods not to ban me?"
I agree, good riddance to bad rubbish!!
"Hitler? Judas? Mohammed? What are you guys doing here? Aaahhhhh....."
Of course, according to the actual Geneva Convention it is entirely lawful for any Iraqi or Iraqi ally to just kill him or any member of his organization on sight without benefit of trial.
"Damn! Pain hurts like hell!"
Then he died, went to hell and found out what real pain was.
Given his real-life proclivities, he would more likely have mumbled "Barely pubescent boy set me up!"
Did he get a glimpse of his 72 virgins named Bubba before he finally died?
"What do you mean I've qualified for the final circle...and who the hell is Dante?"
Zarq's last words: "What's that whistling sound ?"
Don't know this for a fact, but shouldn't he have submitted to the "Will of Allah?" Kismet or something?
'He mumbled something'
"Oh shiiii..."
Caldwell said Friday the latest information available to him gave no indication that a child was killed.
But MessNBC insists on still saying this in the last sentence:
Caldwell said Friday the latest information available to him gave no indication that a child was killed.
They just won't be happy if they can't be accusing US troops of killing "innocent" women and children.
Someone set me up the bomb....
already happened. A journalist asked why zarqawi wasn;t given medical aid and cpr when he was found.
