NJ assemblywomen call for boycott of new Coulter book

TRENTON, N.J. - Commentator Ann Coulter's incendiary words about outspoken 9/11 widows have led two state lawmakers to calls for a boycott of her book in the widows' home state of New Jersey.

Assemblywomen Joan M. Quigley, D-Hudson, and Linda Stender, D-Union, on Thursday called on New Jerseyans to stop buying the book, "Godless: The Church of Liberalism," and for retailers in the state to stop selling it.

"Coulter's vicious characterizations and remarks are motivated by greed and her desire to sell books. By making these claims, she proved herself worse than those she is attempting to vilify - she is a leach trying to turn a profit off perverting the suffering of others," the two assemblywomen said in a statement.

A spokeswoman for Crown Forum, the publisher of Coulter's book, did not immediately return calls for comment Thursday.

In her new book, Coulter writes that a group of New Jersey widows whose husbands perished in the World Trade Center act "as if the terrorist attacks happened only to them."

She also wrote, "I've never seen people enjoying their husbands' deaths so much."

The comments drew criticism Wednesday from Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., who said the book should be called "Heartless," and New York's Republican Gov. George Pataki, who said he was stunned by the remarks.

Coulter appeared Tuesday on NBC's "Today" show and stuck by her stance, saying the women used their grief "to make a political point."

Her criticism was aimed at four New Jersey women she dubbed "The Witches of East Brunswick," after the town where two of them live.

The women - Kristen Breitweiser, Lorie Van Auken, Mindy Kleinberg and Patty Casazza - have spent the years since the 2001 terror attacks supporting an independent commission to examine government failures before the attack. During the 2004 presidential race, they endorsed Democrat John Kerry.

You're right on the money. The LSM will always try to drown out conservative voices. This debate has forced them to put Coulter's views and book in the limelight so she can make her case with an even bigger megaphone. She wins, and we win. :)

You forgot the /sarcasm tag. I figure you had to have forgotten it, because I'm giving you credit for enough intelligence to not believe a word you just wrote.

Wideawake: "Placing what she actually said in its context is precisely what Breitweiser, these assemblywomen, Hewitt and Peach do not want you to do."

Xenalyte: "One need not know the context to declare a quotation out of context. By definition, all quotations are "out of context.""

As I said, someone seemed to know what the context was supposed to be.

Unfortunately, by making nasty personal attacks on the women's marriages, etc. Coulter has made the controversy all about her nasty remarks rather than about the actual political behavior of the 4 women. It's both wrong and counter-productive

Exactly. Exactly. When her comments became personal and questioned the devotion of the departed to their families, Ann went waaaay off the reservation. I'm glad that some can still see that.

That seems pretty personal, sinkspur. Do you know something we all don't about Ann's personal life? ;-)

Ever seen that adam's apple? Could it be that she's a transvestite? The body of a 14 year old boy, long fingers, short-term affairs with men....this is only speculation, of course, with no evidence.

Coulter does this all the time.

Hence the hyperbole. Instead of selling 50K books, she sells 500K.

However, when Coulter mocking tosses in barbs suggesting that these men were probably going to divorce these women, that was way across the lines of human decency.

So when Kitty Kelley came out with her book against the Bush family, and when liberal commentators trashed the Bush twins for their partying, did you get upset too?

What Ann said is way less inflammatory than Craig Kilborn's "Sniper's Wanted" photo of Bush or the NYC Democrat talking about putting a bullet between Bush's eyes.

Ann's not an elected official, she's just a commentator and the fact that public officials and the news media are taking offense at her comments, shows that Ann is revealing the layers of hypocrisy and double-standards of the Left.

"The fact is that, unless they have read the book, neither side has a clue what they are getting so upset about."

That's never stopped anyone before. I don't have any beef with those who are not bothered by the comments and I have not expressed any ill will or engaged in name-calling. However, I have seen comments that people who think the way I think are "whimpering," boys as opposed to men, etc.

Oh for pete' sake...what's creased your shorts this time? Coulter explains the dynamic precisely. Have you even read the book?

I agree. These banshees definitely needed to be brought down, but that line was unnecessary.

But, I still believe that what they did by using their husbands' corpses as political props and their tickets to the inside circle of leftwing politics is far more repulsive that anything Ann said.

Wideawake is completely correct. Placing a quotation in context means reading it in its proper place, in the midst of its surrounding material.

The New Jerseyites don't want you to read the book.

Ergo, they don't want you to know the context.

Sorry, but my intelligence isn't in question if you're the one who doesn't believe that we need free ourselves from MSM-imposed PC by fighting with everything we've got. You're delusional if you think we can play by the rules that liberals write.
