NJ assemblywomen call for boycott of new Coulter book

TRENTON, N.J. - Commentator Ann Coulter's incendiary words about outspoken 9/11 widows have led two state lawmakers to calls for a boycott of her book in the widows' home state of New Jersey.

Assemblywomen Joan M. Quigley, D-Hudson, and Linda Stender, D-Union, on Thursday called on New Jerseyans to stop buying the book, "Godless: The Church of Liberalism," and for retailers in the state to stop selling it.

"Coulter's vicious characterizations and remarks are motivated by greed and her desire to sell books. By making these claims, she proved herself worse than those she is attempting to vilify - she is a leach trying to turn a profit off perverting the suffering of others," the two assemblywomen said in a statement.

A spokeswoman for Crown Forum, the publisher of Coulter's book, did not immediately return calls for comment Thursday.

In her new book, Coulter writes that a group of New Jersey widows whose husbands perished in the World Trade Center act "as if the terrorist attacks happened only to them."

She also wrote, "I've never seen people enjoying their husbands' deaths so much."

The comments drew criticism Wednesday from Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., who said the book should be called "Heartless," and New York's Republican Gov. George Pataki, who said he was stunned by the remarks.

Coulter appeared Tuesday on NBC's "Today" show and stuck by her stance, saying the women used their grief "to make a political point."

Her criticism was aimed at four New Jersey women she dubbed "The Witches of East Brunswick," after the town where two of them live.

The women - Kristen Breitweiser, Lorie Van Auken, Mindy Kleinberg and Patty Casazza - have spent the years since the 2001 terror attacks supporting an independent commission to examine government failures before the attack. During the 2004 presidential race, they endorsed Democrat John Kerry.

What about the children of the troops? How is this in any way better than the left?

I've heard that she lives on coffee and cigarettes, which I tend to believe.

Coffee, cigarettes, and chardonnay.

What other context should there be?

The context in which everyone knows that Ann Coulter is an opinion writer who specializes in puncturing the pretensions and egos of the false idols of the Left.

If the Widows For Kerry contingent can openly claim that President Bush bears personal moral responsibility for the 9/11 murders, Ann can certainly question the motives and behavior of people who say such outrageous things.

She has no way of knowing whether the things she said about their husbands being ready to divorce them is true.

Nor did she claim it was true. She offered that as a possible interpretation of their behavior.

Nice to know you'll stand up for someone on our side telling lies.

Suggesting a possible explanation for a conundrum is not lying, even if the offered explanation turns out to be incorrect.

90% of what we read on FR is speculation, much of it humorous speculation.

When she said "let's invade their countries** and convert them to Christianity", the polite class gasped in horror. Ann's fans cheered her on.

**Don't forget the second part of that quote, "kill their leaders"...

And also, in an interview shortly after that column, when asked about that comment, she said, "well, by the end of the week, two of those three items were official foreign policy."

She also went on to say about the converting to Christianity part, it would highly decrease the probability of suicide bombs and planes running into buildings.

LOL. It will be fun to see the creative way the bookstores hide her book.

Isn't it great how she plays them? She gives them the bait, and they fall all over themselves to denounce her. They just end up looking ridiculous and giving Ann free publicity!

What have these women said that has hurt their children?

Being outspoken moonbats has consequences.

On the other hand, how do you think those kids are going to feel when they hear their father was going to leave their mother? Or that their mother is glad their father is dead?

I don't know. Will Mommy tell them? Or will they buy Coulters book for their kids?

I'm ashamed of this thread and the sheer ugliness being endorsed here.

Cindy Sheehan and these women are lower than most on FR would ever go. Again, these moonbats use the deaths of family to screech their moonbat politics then hide behind their "grieving" status. And you're buying it.

I would need to read them in context. Do you have a direct quote?

I have nothing but contempt for Breitwiser and Co.

My favorite Fat Bottomed Girl is beneath contempt.

O'Reilly had her stutterin' and stammerin' today as he suggested that she might have used some more temperate language. She accused him of "insulting" her when he suggested that she decided to go after the Jersey Girls to sell books.

The irony was delicious: Coulter accusing someone of insults. Her vitriol got the best of her with this latest attack, and she has truly crossed a line that, while she will sell lots of books in the short term, will cause her to be viewed as in the same fringe as Michael Weiner.

Her chapters attacking science via bogus claims and fallacious arguments go a long way towards giving that same impression. She's sounding more and more like the conservative version of Michael Moore and his ilk, which is sad because her earlier books were a lot more rational and focused.

Yes... and...? I didn't mention Hugh Hewitt; I mentioned that Laura I. didn't use the word "disgusting".

How do you know she doesn't know this? Are you privy to information the rest of the public isn't? Perhaps you can read minds? You really should bet on the lottery .... sarc off

It's called satire IDIOT!!!! Or did you get it but just didn't like the satire used?

Why is it okay to say the president is a terrorist, and he and his ilk allowed 9/11 to happen (which had to hurt the entire Bush family and any truly patriotic American) but no one can touch them because they lost relatives in the twin towers?

It's not I who am in the gutter, it's you and people like you who think your morally superior because you won't fight for the truth. You stand by idly while the left drives our nation to ruin and proudly pat yourself on the back for daring not to offend anyone.
