WASHINGTON (AP) -- The federal government should guarantee that all Americans have basic health insurance coverage, says a committee set up by Congress to find out what people want when it comes to health care.
"Assuring health care is a shared social responsibility," says the interim report of the Citizens' Health Care Working Group, a 14-member committee that went to 50 communities and heard from 23,000 people.
The committee describes its recommendations as a framework. The recommendations don't say who would pay for universal health coverage or how much it would cost. The concept of government-guaranteed coverage runs counter to the Bush administration's position that consumers should bear more responsibility for their initial medical expenses.

I want a pony.
If someone will give me a pony, I'll vote for them.
And I think that liberal/socialist celebrity elites should pay for all of it.
Hey, according to the liberals, having a right is the same as an entitlement. So where's my new gun, huh? HuhHuhHuh?
The answer came back that people didn't want health care at all. They wanted health.
So ultimately, the same desire is going to underlie any survey like this - people don't really want "universal" health care, or any other kind, but they'll snap at whatever sounds cheapest with no work involved for themselves.
If I am "crazy" do I get more per month, even if my "disease" like road rage can't be diagnosed? I know I have it, BAD.
And just what kind of people show up for such meetings? It would be the "Gimmees" (slang for 'give me').
Of course they are all in favor of someone else taking care of them regardless of their lifestyle.
I'd like to see how they figured this out.
Question: Do you want health care?
* Yes. Health care can help to keep me alive, and therefore it is good.
* No. Health care is bad. I don't want it. I am suicidal.
Based on people's choices with regards to the preceding questions, this committee determined that the gubmint should provide health care for free. Because it will be free. We won't be taxed out of our ears to pay for it whether or not we use it or anything. No sir, no tragedy of the commons here.
If you think healthcare is expensive now, wait until it's "free."
And Santa, can I have a Hummer? With all the bells and whistles?
Right, universal coverage and a $50 hourly minimum wage.
If someone will give me a pony, I'll vote for them.
Precisely!!!!!
"Assuring health care is a shared social responsibility,"
No it's not! It is my responsibility to take care of my own health and pay for my own health care expenditures.
This isn't some stinky smelly commune, kumbaya.
I just love this quote; When the government robs Peter to pay Paul, it usually get's Pauls support.
I have decided that this is wrong. Therefore, all you socialist parasites out there can pay for your own "health care", and leave mine alone, thank you, as I will not pay for you. What if "they" decide for us? There are some seriously series thingsa goona happin, let me tell you!
Correction....
ILLEGAL IMMAGRANTS want universal health coverage, La Raza group says
Like driving a vehicle, if you want the government to "take the wheel" they will gladly do so, but that puts them in the driver's seat and you're just along for the ride.
I guess there are those who would be happy just being a spectator in their own life.
