Senate Contender in Florida Presses On
NY Times ^ | June 7, 2006 | MARK LEIBOVICH

VENICE, Fla. — Undaunted by a run of horrific poll numbers, staff turmoil and public doubts from leaders of her party, Representative Katherine Harris is thinking confidently beyond November.

Once Ms. Harris wins her race for a Senate seat, she says, she plans to travel everywhere with a guide dog.

"Before I hire anyone to work for me in the Senate, I tell them I'm going to do this," said Ms. Harris, the former Florida secretary of state best — or worst — remembered for her role in the state's election recount of 2000.

Ms. Harris explains that she intends to participate in a program that provides guide dogs for volunteers to train. While cynics may assign unflattering symbolism to a politician who is not blind being led around the Capitol by a guide dog, Ms. Harris is undeterred — by this or by the perception that her role in 2000 makes her too divisive to lure the swing voters necessary to defeat the incumbent Democrat, Bill Nelson.

The Slimes reporter can barely contain his snooty glee.

She should have listened to Jeb, though. The article says Joe Scarborough was approached to run, but declined. I only wish he hadn't because Nelson would be running scared now.

I know that Jeb has said repeatedly he won't run. What is the last day to file as a candidate in Fl

You mean you would be glad if Joe HAD decided to run. Correct?

In any case, Congresswoman Harris continues to say some really interesting things in this race. I think she is a lovely person. I have met her. But I am afraid she is going to lose to Mr. Nelson.

Hell I'll vote for a rock before I'll give Bill Nelson a vote and so would many others down here.

I more or less meant what I wrote, that I wish he hadn't declined when approached to run. I don't blame him, though -- he would have to give up his show for the risk of an election. But he'd have a much, much better shot. And what a great candidate he'd be.

Yup. Joe's pretty sharp. He would've driven Mr. Nelson crazy.

Maybe katherine harris can't win, and all the advice of jeb Bush, etc was terrific advice. But riddle me this:

The republicans couldn't get anyone else with a better chance to run, so at what point is there no point in criticizing Katherine Harris for running? I don't get it. was she discouraged sjust because of her official role in the 2000 election, during which she did her duty exactly as required? I think, unless they have a better candidate, Jeb and all the rest should leave her the heck alone.

WTF? Only two words come to mind when I read this FRUIT LOOP. Now is not the time to release crazy statements like this. Who is advising her? She should be talking about policy that benefits her constituents; not about walking around DC with a guide dog.

Guess the FL MSM had to call in the calvary, as their own pathetic efforts at sliming Harris have failed miserably.

I agree with you totally. Katherine Harris would make a very good Senator and be a substantial improvement over the one representing our state now.

The Leftists have been allowed to color her as they have others who caused them problems - you can think of numerous republicans that have been tarred and feathered by the leftist media - yet Cynthia McKinney, Sen.Ted Kennedy, Rep. Patrict Kennedy, Rep. Jefferson (LA) and their ilk seem to get a pass everytime.

My advise, give all your support to Rep. Harris - you'll eventually be proud that you stood up for right.

I definitely wish Florida the best of luck with Harris. Even if she loses, I hope she does so after putting up a good fight and giving voice to conservatism!

Blah. Free win for Nelson, I hope the national GOP doesn't waste any money on this 'effort'. A half decent candidate could have defeated him handily.

I believe Rove or others tried to get her not to run and she told them to piss up a rope.
