Shepard Smith Smears Swift Boat Vets
Media Monitor ^ | 6/7/2006 | Cliff Kincaid

Posted on 06/07/2006 5:55:04 AM PDT by Mike Bates

While some press attention has been focused on the seeming odd-couple of Rupert Murdoch raising money for Hillary Clinton, another fascinating relationship has apparently been developed between Fox News and Hugh Hefner's Playboy. Fox News' Neil Cavuto aired an interview with Hugh Hefner on May 4, on the grounds that the announcement of his "Playmate of the Year" was "business news," and Fox News anchor Shepard Smith is interviewed in the June issue of Playboy magazine.

Asked about Internet stories that "lack veracity" but which serve as news. Smith replies, "Swift Boats," as if the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth had been engaged not in getting out the truth about John Kerry's military career and dubious war crimes charges, but in smearing the Democratic Senator and 2004 Democratic presidential candidate.

I'm sure you all remember that Fox News is supposed to be the conservative channel.

SNIP

It is strange in the sense that Smith talks about his "group" at Fox News, which wants objective news coverage, and other nameless people who don't seem to agree. However, he denies Fox has a conservative agenda, says he's never been asked to push a conservative point of view, and that he loves and trusts Bob Schieffer of CBS News.

Except for the devotion to Schieffer and the smear of the Swift Boat vets, the exchanges are mostly irrelevant and beside the point, which is that a Fox News anchor had made Playboy into a "respectable" forum. I suspect it is part of the same plan that involved Fox News media personalities such as Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity interviewing Howard Stern, who has attracted millions of listeners by talking dirty. This is the kind of audience that is supposed to count.

Beg to differ. Shep is not very good at what he does. I agree with others. Some guy at FNC must have a crush on Shep.

"Two years ago FNS was taking heat because they were perceived, and rightly so, as NOT fair and balanced.

Such can not be said now. They do have a wide range of opinions and it would follow that we conservatives would not agree with all sides.

I see nothing wrong with that

And while I don't like it, I agree.

Like many other conservatives, I was initially thrilled with FNC, and I believe "we" helped it reach its popularity and standings.

Unfortunately, they are the ONLY electronic media which even comes close to offering ANY conservative views, so what are we to do?

It seems Shep has a difficult time keeping vindictivness under control, not a good trait for a reporter.

Some are waiting for him to come out of the closet. It is said Murdock has worked to keep this story very quiet. So who knows!

You can get your news from the Web...there is nothing that says you need to receive any information from the MSM television except force of habit. Kick it, is what I say.

Fox News is going the way of MSM. Britt and his crew are ok as is John Gibson. O'Reilly and Julian Phillips are so full of themselves its nauseating. Murdock's support of Hillary is really showing.

I thought Shep's coverage of Katrina was over the edge. As far as FOX goes. I stop watching after Brit's show. Shep is not worth watching. O'Reilley spends too much time bloviating about what a great guy he is. And Hannity and Colmes have move too much into doing a show like Greta about missing folks, criminal activity and frankly Alan Colmes creeps me out.

Well .. Brit Hume and Tony Snow were the only two on Fox that I felt would give the news a fair shake.

But .. when Fox hired 2-3 extreme left-wing people who never did anything but repeat the democrat talking points .. I lost interest.

And .. paying $36 for the priviledge of seeing the program was too pricy for me. If I want left-wing propaganda I have all the alphabet networks to choose from.

"Unfortunately, they are the ONLY electronic media which even comes close to offering ANY conservative views, so what are we to do?"

We should relish the contrast. People can see smarmy Shep trying to justify dem bull crap against genuine truth from conservatives, e.g. Coulter, Ingram, Hannity, etc.

The differences are obvious and that IS "Fair and Balanced"!

Early morning sleepy observation.

Has anyone other than me noticed how Shep reads/gives the news.

His voice changes ever so slightly when he talks about anything conservative.

This voice inflection (glee) into the way he reports any negative conservative news is highly noticeable.

Was that of a male or female?

You are right. That alone would be a firing offense where I work.

Again, the false premise. What did the SBVFTs say that was not true?

"Thank you for your honorable service to our country, BCSCO."

Thanks, but there are a lot more people deserving of your appreciation than I. I didn't do much.

You did your duty honorably. No one can ask for more.

It's the little guys doing what they are supposed to do that make it all work. DOn't underestimate yourslef, or the value of your service, in whatever form it takes.

The world is run by those who show up. You showed up. You stayed. You served with Honor. Guys like you are what makes this country great.

"Guys like you are what makes this country great."

Hey, watch it! I might get a big head. Nah, I'm too old for that. Really, though, I did very little in the way of service to my Country. Others have done far more, many paying the full sacrifice. They're the ones who deserve our respect. May we never forget them or the service they performed.

This is not new behavior for Shep. He showed the same behavior in the summer of 2004 when the Swiftboat Vets story first broke. At the conclusion of his program he referred to the Swiftboat Vets and closed by calling them "Those liars".

He has never apologized nor retracted that accusation, and Fox News has allowed his unprofessional, unethical behavior to go uncorrected. For me, it's not a question of bias. I don't expect "journalists" to be unbiased.

If he had simply said "They haven't convinced me" or even "I don't believe them" that would be fine. He, however, misused his professional position to publicly slander the Swiftboat Vets, and from that moment I have had no use whatsoever for him. Again, not because of his bias - we're all biased, but because he is professionally unethical, incompetent and negligent.
