Republican wins bellwether House race (CA-50th)
Associated Press ^ | June 7, 2006 | ROBERT TANNER

A former Republican congressman narrowly beat his Democratic rival early Wednesday for the right to fill the House seat once held by imprisoned Randy "Duke" Cunningham, a race closely watched as a possible early barometer of next fall's vote.

Republican Brian Bilbray emerged victorious after a costly and contentious race against Democrat Francine Busby, a local school board member who ran against Cunningham in 2004.

With 90 percent of precincts reporting, Bilbray had 56,016 votes or 49.5 percent. Busby trailed with 51,202 votes or 45 percent. "I think that we're going back to Washington," Bilbray told a cheering crowd of supporters.

The race — one of dozens of election contests in eight states — was viewed by Democrats as an opportunity to capture a solidly Republican district and build momentum on their hopes to capture control of the House

With 45% of the vote, Busby got the same percentage that Kerry got in this district in 2004.

This is very good news.

Of course, we will hear nothing today except how Bilbray's margin of victory was not as much as predicted, and how the Democrats are going to bootstrap from this defeat on to electoral triumph in November.

But, you know what? When your opponent deludes himself, it works to your advantage.

Busby backed McCain's immigration bill. Bilbray's Web Site called for several steps related to immigration, including construction of a fence "from the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico," and banning "illegal aliens from any access to Social Security benefits."

I hope this sends a message to the House and to the GOP. Secure borders and enforcement first can be a winning issue in the fall.

Francine Busby to illlegals: "Everybody can help. You can all help. You don't need papers for voting, you don't need to be a registered voter to help."

I cannot believe that she was dumb enough to say that in public. It is unfortunately true that you don't need papers for voting, that vote fraud undoubtedly happens on a wide scale across this country.

He's still a RINO but he was anti-illegal immigration and for the "prevent gay marriage" amendment in this campaign. He didn't want McCain's help in his district so a fundraiser with McCain was cancelled.

It was the foaming-at-the-mouth drive-by media who set this contest up as an omen for November. Watch the traitors spin this tomorrow--Chris Matthews will be most hysterical of all.

I see the pundits were wrong.

Again.

(Wonder if Bush notices this race hung on (not enogh democrat) illegal ballots, and illegal immigrants?)

It seems to me that, for too many people, the Republicans may mess things up, but the Democrats are so unimpressive, so irrelevant, that they aren't even worth considering, no matter how bad things get.

Whoa! Truth on DU?!?

This poster will probably be suspended by the end of the day.

McCain cancelled that fund-raiser when it became obvious that he (the House winner) didn't support him (the Senate whiner).

Bilbray won because he ran hard against illegal immigration. People calling him a Rino don't seem to notice this.

Yes, don't you know by now? Democrats ALWAYS win, even when they lose. No matter the facts, the outcome, they are WINNERS. Meanwhile....back in REALITY...

Unfortunately we will be seeing more of these ridiculous headlines...

I view it as a referendum between the House bill and the Senate bill.

Yahoo was so desperate to come up with something positive sounding for the Democrats

Gee, I can do better than that.

The important thing is to keep control of the House, we got some good people chairing key committees. Would you want Charlie Rangel heading Ways and Means - he'd have direct access to your wallet!
