FNC just called it for Bilbray.

Very good- I guess this pushed it over the top:

Francine Busby "You don't need papers for voting" (VIDEO)--"You don't need papers for voting, you don't need to be a registered voter to help."  Francine Busby, the Democratic candidate for congress in the 50th district...

It was still way too close for such a heavily Republican district.

It should be an interesting replay come this November.

have you got a link on that? I've checked ABCNews, CBSNews, CNN, MSNBC, and can find nothing that mentions the election has been called a Bilbray win.

No link. I'm watching it on the tube and they announced it minutes ago.

It's a pretty easy call, though. The numbers have stayed fairly consistent all night. It would take intervetion by Chicago's Daley family for the dems to pull this one out.

I just checked the official election site confirming your number. A bit scary though, how Francine closed the gap, especially considering KOGO radio reported earlier the count on absentee ballots might not be completed till Friday, as "thousands of absentee ballots were turned in yesterday."

U.S. REPRESENTATIVE 50TH DISTRICT - (RUN-OFF)

Precincts: 500
Counted: 451
Percentage: 90.2%

Vote for: 1
BRIAN BILBRAY - REP
56016
49.49%

FRANCINE BUSBY - DEM
51202
45.24

If Busby's relying on the absentee ballots she's toast.

She's toast anyway.

Thanks for the good news.

A bit off-topic but I've been considering re-registering (in California) as a "non-partisan" voter. This would give me more choices and would also allow me to choose which democratic loser I want on the ballot in November. I don't see a down side to this. Any comments?

"Republican wins bellwether House race By ROBERT TANNER, AP National Writer
11 minutes ago

A former Republican congressman narrowly beat his Democratic rival early Wednesday for the right to fill the House seat once held by imprisoned Randy "Duke" Cunningham, a race closely watched as a possible early barometer of next fall's vote.

Republican Brian Bilbray emerged victorious after a costly and contentious race against Democrat Francine Busby, a local school board member who ran against Cunningham in 2004.

With 90 percent of precincts reporting, Bilbray had 56,016 votes or 49.5 percent. Busby trailed with 51,202 votes or 45 percent. "I think that we're going back to Washington," Bilbray told a cheering crowd of supporters.

The race — one of dozens of election contests in eight states — was viewed by Democrats as an opportunity to capture a solidly Republican district and build momentum on their hopes to capture control of the House."

I'm part of what his people call the "Houston Problem". We've been trying for years to lower the cap on property tax appraisal increases (currently at 10% a year) to something at least somewhat closer to the rate of inflation (3% would be great, 5% would still be good). The Reps in the legislature have systematically prevented this, so us people who happen to have been living in areas with high property value appreciation have seen our taxes increase, in some cases, 10-fold, over the past 20 years (not all due to appraisal increases, by the way).

As much as that irks me, we learn yesterday that Perry will not let Harris County complete their toll road loop unless the state gets a huge cut - in the billions. He's doing the same to San Antonio on a small section of highway on the east side. And, as I've mentioned in the past several times, he's signing secret agreements (actually agreements that are not fully disclosed to the public) with private companies to allow them to build toll roads, with the almost certain provisions that preclude any upgrade to parallel highways (state owned and free - at least now). He also, in 2004, attempted 3 times to convert freeway sections to toll roads. He's got some obsession here.

But you're right, I'll take the 5 House seats any day, and he's been mostly conservative in other areas - but when my taxes shoot up (and he's NEVER talked about holding schools and lower government accountable for spending), and my freeway system is thrown overboard - without even any debate in this state, he loses me.

I look at him as a Gerald Ford (albeit better on the social issues). We need him defeated by anyone (unfortunately it would have to be a liberal this year), and then a Ronald Reagan (aka, Dan Patrick), can rise up and clean house.

I also don't appreciate Perry's people (not you, but I can name names) trolling this site to attack anyone who disagrees with him and viciously attacking them - including other politicians.

But let's here it for Bilbray!!!

"Donna Tello?"

Donatello was a Renaissance artist.

The KOGO announcer said low turnout.

Exactly. The Democrats just couldn't get their people to the polls or inspire more than a tiny shift of support from Independents and Republicans to the Democratic candidate despite spending enormous sums of money on GOTV and having the Duke Cunnningham fiasco gifted to them with a blue and pink ribbon on it.

One might respond that the Republicans didn't get very many of their voters out either. That would be missing the point. It is the Democrats who carry the burden of inspiring a broad-based change of opinion and support sufficient to give them control of Congress this year.

To take control this November, the Democrats have to expend enourmous energy rushing the net repeatedly to force the point to a win on each and every race. All the Republicans have to do is stand back at the baseline and hold serve.

It's hard to rush the net and pound out precise game-winners when you're fat and out of breath (that is, dragging along a lot of bored, lazy, and indifferent voters with you).

Yes, Donato di Niccolo Betto Bardi, known as Donatello, born in Florence in 1386, died there 1466, noted sculptor, later reincarnated as a ninja turtle.

But there is a real live Libertarian office-seeker in California whose first name is Donna and whose surname is Tello.

Speaking of cousins, Bilbray's cousin James H. Bilbray used to be a Democratic congressman from Nevada, for the district earlier represented by Harry Reid.

What that has to do with the price of beans in China, I'm not sure.

Hollywood director Rob Reiner was the leading backer of a measure in California to create a $2.4 billion universal preschool program, which went down to defeat by a 60-to-40-percent margin."

Hip Hip Hooray!!!!! It's the end of Meathead's political career and maybe a sign of some growing fiscal sanity in California!

That isn't news. Even most of the MSM newspapers in California strongly opposed that voter proposition.
