VILSECK, Germany Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts hiked through Grafenwöhr Training Area and fell asleep to the rattle of helicopters and machine guns during Intercamp 2006 one of the largest Scout jamborees in Europe.
Some 2,000 Scouts, aged 11 to 17, camped out at Vilseck Army Airfield from Friday to Monday during the jamboree, which involved troops from the U.S., Canada, Britain, Germany, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, France and Belgium.

I too have long ago fond memories of camping out in Grafenwohr.

in our kitchen sink tonight then. lol!
;)
We went every six months. alternating battery and battalion tests. January and February were brutal, especially in "Tent city."
In 1960 a 3rd battalion, 18th field, 8" round landed in Tent city. A large number of 3rd Cavalry were killed. my memory is not what it once was, but I think it was 26.
Sorry to hear that - it is tragic.
I was part of the reconstruction project in the early 1980's. Open bay barracks with johns 4 buildings away.
That story was legendary when I was there (three times) in 1969.
I heard it was 28.
I was stationed in Babenhausen, 2nd How, 5th Field. That was in the days of the Pentomic concept. 36th group was made up of differing size guns. 3rd How, 18th Field was one of the battalions assigned to our group.
It was tragic from many aspects. The battalion commander had dismissed the gun sergeant on that particular gun that morning. They were supposed to fire charge 5 green bag, and loaded charge 7 white bag, so the powder cutter was standing there empty handed as he was supposed to be. The range safety officer discovered a 100 mil error in the sight setting, and had it corrected. Had it gone undetected the round would have fallen into a relatively empty spot.
I was in battalion Fire Direction in our outfit, I had a friend I had gone through training with in 3rd/18th FDC which is how I was able to find out what I did find out.
Needless to say with so many to blame they hung the Range Safety Officer, whitewashed everyone else.
What do you mean by open bay? When I was there we had three different types of accomodation. Large tents with coal burning stoves, low squat buildings with coal burning stoves, and once we actually stayed in real barracks up on the main post area.
That's what we were told, since I had Safety Officer detail.
I had thought, though that they shot out because of an elevation error.
The charge error makes more sense.
In the back area there were barracks that held something like 18 or 20 people in a single room. They must have been extended stay quarters. We spent about 7 months at a stretch there. After two(2) years my time was up and came back to the states.
