Governor's races lead hefty primary ballots Hard-fought campaigns in hands of voters now Tuesday, June 06, 2006 By BILL BARROW Capital Bureau MONTGOMERY -- It's Alabama politics' version of the Final Four.

The top contenders for Alabama governor made their last pitches to the electorate Monday, setting up today's primary contests, which will likely determine who will advance to the general election in November.

Gov. Bob Riley, his Republican challenger Roy Moore and Democratic Lt. Gov. Lucy Baxley each took to the air, with fly-arounds that allowed them to touch down in every corner of the state, including Mobile.

Baxley's chief opponent, former Gov. Don Siegelman, meanwhile, was relegated to his chair at the defense table of the federal courthouse in Montgomery, where he listened to the latest testimony in his corruption trial.

That limited the Mobile native's campaign time to a lunchtime Q&A in front of a bank of television cameras assembled outside, though he promised to shake more hands Monday night after the day's proceedings concluded.

The Democratic gubernatorial hopefuls also include Joe Copeland of Cullman, Harry Lyon of Pelham, Katherine Mack of Pittsview, Nathan Mathis of Newton and James Potts of Wilton.

The governor's races top a long ballot in both party primaries today.

There are contested primaries for several lower offices as well, including an expensive, bitter GOP matchup for Supreme Court chief justice, a crowded Republican battle for lieutenant governor, and Democratic tilts for treasurer and secretary of state.

Both parties have primaries for statewide court seats, attorney

"Governor Riley will be re-elected Governor of Alabama."

It won't even be close. Governor Riley will probably win the GOP primary today by 60 to 65%.

...Of course, the same people who know nothing about Alabama politics will immediately switch from being pro Judge Moore to claiming that Lucy Baxley will win in November...

...And they'll be just as wrong in November as they were about Moore winning today.

Some people talk more than they think.

My heart has been warmed because tonight has been a complete rout for the forces of Moore, and by extension, the forces of the trial lawyers.

The one thing that does unnerve me though, the idea that Larry Darby has 46% of the vote, now one of the reasons that this is happening is because Tyson refused to back off of his prosecution of a black school board member for his misuse of system funds. But still, the idea that Larry Darby could win a primary just because Tyson wasn't willing to be Joe Reed's lapdog, thats frightening

"With 86 percent of the precincts reporting in the Republican primary, the unofficial count showed Riley polled 250,356 votes, or 65 percent, to Moore's 134,004 votes, or 35 percent."

Didn't even need to vote statewide to call this one...just listen to me!

I nailed Governor Riley's win percentage.

Anyone want to go double or nothing for Riley's win percentage over Baxley in November?!
