Lethal form of heroin takes steep toll here (Pittsburgh)

Three deaths, 35 overdoses are blamed on the lethal form of drug plaguing the city. And the mixture has caused at least 100 deaths from Philadelphia to Chicago

City police detectives were working overtime to scoop up drug dealers and lean on users for information as a lethal batch of heroin snaked its way through city neighborhoods and beyond, causing at least 35 overdoses and as many as three deaths.

The heroin, which has cropped up in at least eight Pittsburgh neighborhoods since Saturday, is likely laced with the potent painkiller fentanyl, about 80 times stronger than morphine.

As authorities tried to make a dent locally in the heroin trade, the federal government announced yesterday that it had worked with Mexico to close a lab across the border that might be the source of the fentanyl that has killed heroin users in Pennsylvania and seven other states.

John Walters, director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, said it was still not clear whether the fentanyl was mixed with heroin at the lab in Mexico or after it entered the United States

It's time to ban heroin! It should be made illegal, gathered up and taken off the streets where it is killing children!

Those that are providing heroin should be sued! If it is coming from neighboring states, they should change their laws.

We should initiate buy back programs.

It is past time to close the 'heroin show' loophole!

/sarcasm

A hard-core addict, when they're using the heroin,
sometimes they're only getting enough to prevent them from going into withdrawal,
If they feel there is something out there they can take that will also make them high, they'll seek it out.

Why worry about a lifestyle choice? IMO Leave them to their fate.

Why add something to a drug that kills off customers?

Quality control is a problem with illegal drugs. Producers cut it badly or get the smart idea to lace it and users get hurt. We had this problem during prohibition with deadly alcohols laced with methyl and "ginger jake," resulting in paralysis, blindness and/or death.

On the flip side, users get used to cooking X amount of heroin based on the average cut in the area, then some ultra-pure heroin comes and and, ta-da, overdoses go up. Since it's illegal, there's no regulation on purity labelling.

"It was my understanding that at least 50% of first time heroin users rejected the drug and died on first use anyway."

Where on earth did you hear that?

That would be as if 50% of people who got a root canal and got some Vicodin from the pharmacy died on the first use. An opiate is an opiate.

You have got some seriously bad information my friend.. Lord have mercy, what has the "War on Some Drugs" done to people? How could a person be so misinformed?

I am not advocating the stuff, but many MANY more people die alcohol related deaths than all illegal drugs combined.

Fortunately, my heroin is fine.

LOL.

I just heard on the radio here in the Burgh that this deadly heroin cocktail that's knocking off so many here and in Philly ..... was sold in a bag that read, "Get High or Die Trying".

You'd think these users would get a little clue from those words.

;-)

Quick question. Why add something to a drug that kills off customers? What is the motive behind adding to Heroin?

Maybe it's an evil conspiracy to knock off a number of Democrat voters in Pittsburgh and Philly.

"the federal government announced yesterday that it had worked with Mexico to close a lab across the border that might be the source of the fentanyl"

I found this statement interesting. It seems that the feds can find and shutdown a lab if they want to. It's just more proof that the war on drugs is nothing more than a revenue generating exercise. It generates revenue for the pusher, law enforcement, lawyers, jails, you name it. The war on drugs will never be over as long as everyone is making money off of it.

DEATH be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadfull, for, thou art not so,
For, those, whom thou think'st, thou dost overthrow,
Die not, poore death, yet cast their vote Democratically.

The Democratic Party supports full civil rights for Necro-Americans!

Junkies dying of an overdose is bad because ...?

Three deaths, 35 overdoses are blamed on the lethal form of drug plaguing the city. And the mixture has caused at least 100 deaths from Philadelphia to Chicago

Oh wait I see, 35 overdoses that were treated at taxpayer expense. If you're willing to do drugs then that's fine, but don't expect anyone else to care for you if it screws you up. This reminds me of people who get in trouble on Everest and then expect to be rescued. You knowingly engage in risky behavior, then don't complain if it bites you in the a$$
