A society always gets more of whatever it subsidizes, whether it's corn, tobacco or the idle rich. And subsidizing spoiled heiresses at the expense of, well, everyone else is the goal of those members of Congress who are pushing to greatly reduce, or even repeal, the federal estate tax. Despite reams of data that show that the estate tax only touches the top 1 percent of U.S. taxpayers, and despite the fact that the Mom and Pop businesses and family farms of the sort that earn our sympathy simply are not affected by this tax, the repeal has already passed the House and was near approval in the Senate last year before Hurricane Katrina disrupted everything. If the government took the money and burned it, then one could argue that the tax on estates worth more than $2 million was just punitive class warfare. But because the money pays for things that benefit everyone, the government's 90-year history of taxing the transfer of large pots of money from one generation to the next is both reasonable and fair.
So it's basically the middle class that gets squeezed once again: the so-called 'bourgeousie' that the left despises, while the 'vanguard' class remains unaffected. If that isn't enough proof that today's 'Rats are Stalinists, then I don't know what is.
The rich get richer, it's true. But that is nothing compared to the fact that the libnuts get more and petulant with their journalistic spew.
Yes, it is; if only because it works so well. There is a seemingly limitless attraction of many to those who preach freedom while creating dependency.
Only a demented mind could consider not stealing from someone to be a subsidy.
Give it back? They are going to write the people a check?
If the rich are getting richer, that's fine with me! It makes increased investment more likely and paves the way for job growth. I hope the looney leftists pardon me for my failure to be alarmed and offended! LOL :)
Their whole argument is this:
"It's not fair your parents earned a lot of dough and mine didn't. Therefore, I want you to take the money from you."
I know what their argument is, I'm just pointing out the nonsensical use of the word subsidy.
Nailed. Unfortunately it isn't on the door of the cathedral, and no one is listening or reading, since the poor who are life's suckers, outnumber those who break their backs contributing.
This bears repeating, repeatedly!
Allowing people to keep their own money IS NOT A SUBSIDY!!!
Well, you know what I mean, give it back in relation to repeal of the estate tax, which I am guessing will be bad mouthed so much it won't make the repeal. No, give it back was a liberal slip of the tongue, and words have meaning. Good catch. Something I tend to do in relation to our once Representative Republic, that has in the words of liberals, become a democracy.
Only a liberal could possibly consider 'DYING'--a TAXABLE EVENT!
When we were teenagers, fair meant everything, but then some of had a distorted or selfish view of fair. It appears that teenage view has slid into adulthood.
Translation: "But because the money pays for things that benefit everyone, the government's 90-year history of taxing - FILL IN THE BLANK - is both reasonable and fair."
What's next, THE INTERNET? Sorry, I had to say it.
That's how feudalism gets started.
In an ideal world, kids would be kicked out of the house at 21 and left to fend for themselves without a cent from their parents.
Best thing for the brats. Better than unearned millions.
But only if it is true for everyone's children. All should start from zero and work their way up--or down.
There's also a record number of rich folks. This is a problem, why?!?
I'm surprised this appeared in the SLTrib.
Oops. Reading comprehension problems. No, this is EXACTLY what I'd expect to see in the SLTrib. Wealth redistribution is one of their favorite hobbies.
