DETROIT -- Less than a week after announcing plans to offer the first diesel-powered full-size sport utility vehicle in the United States, DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Group said it is halting production of the diesel version of its small Jeep Liberty SUV.

You can count the number of E85 stations in Michigan on two hands.

I would love to get some of the Diesels they sell in Europe. As quick as the equivalent gas models. huge torque (which I love), and great economy. Something like an Audi A4 3.0 TDI which goes 0-60 in 7.0 seconds, hits 146, and returns 36 mpg (British). Or a BMW 535d. 0-60 in 6.3, 155 mph, and 35 mpg. Or even one of the lesser powered ones that isn't super quick but brings 40+ mpg in something the size of a C Class. We get the nice diesel in the Mercedes E, but don't really get many cream of the crop diesels beyond that. For the Golf and Passat for instance we get a really watered down version of what they get in Europe. Why? Outdated US emission standards.

I wouldn't spend what they'd want for one anyway on a new car. I'm gonna drive my current vehicle till the rear-end falls off.

Low sulfur diesel fuel (which these cars require) is going to go mainstream in '07, due to heavy duty truck emission standards.
The Diesel is not dead (I hope).

You have a higher opinion of these sluggish, noisy, smelly beasts than I do.
The 2006 Passat TDI I rented in Germany last summer was okay, driveable but kinda pokey. The 2006 I rented six weeks ago was abysmal; worst case of turbo-lag I've ever endured, and lots of electronic quirks, including the very most annoying guidance system on the planet, and a pushbutton parking brake that had a mind of its own.
It pains me to admit it, but I've enjoyed the turbodiesel Renaults I've rented much more than the German iron. The Espace was especially nice.
But no turbodiesel I've driven, even the BMWs, is as all-around driveable as my Prius.

We have a Jeep Liberty and I would not recommend this car. The gas mileage just sucks.

But the real question is, how many degrees of seperation is their between E85 and Kevin Bacon?

Hopefully that Prius will be as reliable as the diesel.

Because the politicians are too heavily invested in "pi$$anol". Modern diesels and for that matter HPDI 2-stroke engines are cleaner, more powerful, and up to 40% more fuel efficient.
Why would we let the truth mess up a massive political $$$$$ windfall.

You have a 4x4 or 4x2? Rented a 4x4 auto and mpg was in low teens.

I love our '05 Liberty CRD. It gets 28 mpg @ 70 mph on the highway and 22 to 24 around town.
It will tow 5000 lbs and once the turbo spools, it will light the tires.
If Bill Clinton never was elected, we would be driving 25 mpg Turbo Diesel Yukons and Tahoes today.
Greta doesn't have to go to Aruba to find out who killed the CRD. He's living in Chappaqua.
