Interesting, but then you know how I feel about the violence in TV and games for kids to see and play.

Is there a video game where the gamer plays a police state that tries to censors everything in sight? I bet Jack Thompson would approve of THAT game...

rofl.. used to do something similar in roller coaster tycoon. there was a cheat code to change people's opinion.

The kid is 16. Did they confiscate all the R-rated (nobody under 17) movies in the house? How about books/magazines of, um, questionable content for youth?

Anyone who lets their kids play first person shooters is guilty of neglect IMHO.

Go read up on the studies post WWI when the military went from practicing with bullseye targets to human shaped ones..

Video Games are not to blame I'm sure for this incident, but to subject kids to this sort of clearly effective mental conditioning is abuse.

hahaha, sweet! i used to love trapping people within roller coasters, trees, water, etc. If I had known about the opinion cheat code, I could have played that game entirely Soviet-style! all rides are the same! and you WILL like them. and plenty will die in my park, but I sweep it under the rug. yessss.....

Not remotely, go read the studies as I have pointed out.

Back before and during WWI the army trained rifle practice with standard round bulleyes... What they found out in battle is that a moral and decent human being would often hesitate to pull the trigger when faced with a live human target... They switched over to sillouette targets and found that the hesitation factor dropped significantly...

Modern first person shooters are just more mental conditioning to shoot without thinking when faced with a real life situation.. or desensitizing of the humanity of the act. This is well documented.

That's still a bit of a stretch to say that my parents 'abused' me because I played Wolfenstein. It sounds suspiciously like liberal do-gooders who would also say I was 'abused' because my father taught me how to shoot at a very young age. If faced with a situation where I had to fire at someone, I believe the latter would have much more to do with my lack of hesitation pulling the trigger than playing Wolfenstein or Doom when I was 13.

Anyways, I'll read the study. Off to google!

Sorry, I believe it is. Your parents I'm sure were ignorant of the information.. however being conditioned to fire without thought is not something anyone should be wanting or willfully allowing their child to do.

I don't agree that video games make people go out and kill people or things.. but first person shooters certainly condition the mind to react without thought when they find themselves in those situations. A good thing for a militiaman... not a good thing for a child.

I'm having a bit of a hard time finding this study. Do you have a link or remember the name of it?

As an aside, have you ever played a first person shooter?

I nailed JT on this issue a few years ago here on FR regarding a school shooting in Kentucky.

He was all over the games angle for the shooter but didn't even know what games the shooter played.

I knew kids who played games with the shooter and they said he didn't play any shoot-em up violent games, making JT dead wrong. Again.

LOL...you won't find him bragging about his work here on FR any more!

the detective said he is not drawing any conclusions from his findings. “I think it goes beyond video games,...”

Ya think?

Our boys play Call of Duty 1 and 2, and Medal of Honor. Both are rated M, and they have cursing and **horror** war scenes!!!!

Of course, I would never let them have something like Grand Theft Auto.

Anyway, I too think it goes beyond M-rated video games.
