June 5, 2006 - Giuliani, McCain Are Hottest Presidential Candidates, Quinnipiac University National Thermometer Shows; Feelings For McCain Cool Slightly As Race Heats Up
When it comes to potential presidential candidates, Democratic and independent voters favor Republicans Arizona Sen. John McCain and former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani more than Republicans and independents like Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton, according to a Quinnipiac University national 'Thermometer' survey released today.

The independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll asked voters to rate 19 national leaders from 0 to 100 on a "feeling thermometer," with the highest numbers reflecting the warmest feelings. Results in mean scores, not percentages, show:
  • Giuliani with the highest overall score - 63.5, with Republicans giving him a 73.5; Democrats 57.5 and independents 61.1.
  • McCain with an overall score of 56: 59.3 from Republicans, 53.5 from Democrats and 56.4 from independents.
  • Clinton with a total score of 49.9, with Democrats giving her a 72 rating, Republicans 25.2 and independents 48.9.
"Sen. Clinton is a more polarizing figure than either Sen. McCain or Mayor Giuliani," said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "She has almost universal name recognition. Because it is harder to change a voter's opinion once it is formed, her work is cut out for her once she gets past her core supporters."

Among other findings of the poll:
  • McCain's support shows a slight change since the March Quinnipiac University survey, with his mean dropping 3.7 points overall, and 5.2 points among Democrats. The ratings for Sen. Clinton and Giuliani changed little.
  • Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois, whose mean score of 58.4 (71.3 among Democrats and 42 among Republicans), put him second overall, remains largely unknown. Fifty-five percent of registered votes don't know enough to rate him, but that figure has fallen 4 points since March as his rating has dropped also.
  • Many potential 2008 candidates are largely unknown to voters, including Republican Senators George Allen of Virginia and Bill Frist of Tennessee, Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts and Democratic Senators Evan Bayh of Indiana, Joe Biden of Delaware, Russell Feingold of Wisconsin, Christopher Dodd of Connecticut and former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner.

The leaders, their mean scores and percent of voters who said they did not know enough about them to offer an opinion:
  • Giuliani - 63.5 - (13 percent)
  • Obama - 58.4 - (55 percent)
  • Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice - 56.1 (9 percent)
  • McCain - 56 (17 percent)
  • Clinton - 49.9 (2 percent)
  • 2004 Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards - 49.4 (21 percent)
  • Biden - 48.8 (55 percent)
  • Bayh - 47.9 (74 percent)
  • Romney - 47.5 (67 percent)
  • Warner - 47.1 (72 percent)
  • Allen - 46.8 (72 percent)
  • Former Vice President Al Gore - 45.7 (3 percent)
  • Dodd - 45.3 (64 percent)
  • 2004 Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry -45.2 (6 percent)
  • Feingold - 45.1 (62 percent)
  • President George W. Bush - 42.9 (0 percent)
  • Frist - 41.8 (51 percent)
  • Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld - 41.5 (12 percent)
  • Vice President Dick Cheney - 40.5 (5 percent)
From May 23- 30, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,534 registered voters nationwide. The survey has a margin of error of +/- 2.5 percentage points.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida and nationwide as a public service and for research. For additional data -- www.quinnipiac.edu or call (203) 582-5201

TREND: I'd like to get your feelings toward some of our political leaders and other people who have been in the news. I'll read the name of a person and I'd like you to rate that person using something called the feeling thermometer.

You can choose any number between 0 and 100. The higher the number, the warmer or more favorable you feel toward that person, the lower the number, the colder or less favorable.

If we come to a person who you haven't heard enough about to form an opinion, you don't need to rate the person. Just tell me and we'll move on to the next one ...

Will someone PLEASE sit these silly faces at quinnipiac down and explain to them that neither juan mckennedy nor rudy who? can survive past the first few Republican primaries?

Republican primary voters will NOT vote for a traitor who wants to hand our country to illegal alien invaders, or a guy who is anti second amendment, pro queer "marriage" pro affirmative action pro partial birth abortion who lived with two queers between marriages 2 and 3.

Quinnipiac polls this far out are as useful as giving a drowning man a drink of water. The red herring in all of this is the focus on McCain - Conservatives like me can't stand him and, this being a Quinnipiac poll, I suspect that more liberals are pushing him than conservatives.

Conservatives know that McCain doesn't have a snowball's chance of getting out the primaries with enough support to get to the convention.

Pro queen Marriage?? Rudy is NOT pro-Queer Marriage - he believes in marriage only between a man and a woman and is not going to take your guns away and will not kill all your babies so relax!

I think its because the American people are sick and tired of the Republicans and the Democrats right now and want something different. Believe me NEITHER PARTY is popular with the American people right now although the MSM puts the emphasis ONLY on the Republicans being unpopular.

"Republican primary voters will NOT vote for a traitor who wants to hand our country to illegal alien invaders, or a guy who is anti second amendment, pro queer "marriage"

Now I don't like McCain any more than you do. Can't stand the sucker.
But most polls including this one have Rudy with mors support from Republicans than anyone else.
So you may not be correct in your assertion that Republicans will not vote for him.
And btw, Rudy opposes gay marriage.

The problem is that in all the "straw polls," McLame and Guiliani get hammered by the conservatives.

There are Rudy trolls on this list and the "conservative" media (Pohoretz, for one). This is propaganda, possibly paid. Don't believe it.

FACT:

"Republican" Rudy Giuliani, as Mayor of New York failed to support Republican candidates for governor in New Jersey and New York.

"Republican" Rudy Giuliani supported Democratic Candidates for governor of New York and New Jersesy

Rudy Giuliani believes in National Gun Registration and a "qualifying test" on a national level to own a firearm.

"Republican" Rudy Giuliani campaigned cross country with Bill Clinton to push his Anti-Crime Bill.

"Republican" Rudy Giuliani marched in gay pride parades and appeared in drag at a homosexual event

Rudy Giuliani continued his predecessor's policies of directing New York police not to cooperate with INS.

Rudy Giuliani DID clean up overt crime in New York City and made the subways run on time. Mussolini and Hitler could have done so also.

Rudy Giuliani or John McCain are the PERFECT candidates for Republican Presidential nominees - if you are a Democrat that is.

Red State conservatives and blue state conservatives won't vote for them. Democrats have their own liberal candidate - they don't need another. They would ASSURE a Demcorat victory.

The Quinnipiac College Poll is a biased left-wing liberal poll which carefully tailors its questions to achieve its objective of molding public opinion.

And who believes the straw polls I ask? I believe these polls more than I do a straw poll. DO YOU REALLY THINK FRIST WOULD WIN THE PRESIDENCY? He won the last straw poll before Newt won this one. Thats a joke! I would believe Newt winning more than Frist!

RUDY DID NOT DRESS IN DRAG AT A HOMOSEXUAL EVENT!!! HE DRESSED AS VICTOR VICTORIA AT A PRESS DINNER!

I'm just saying, whever the people actually get to vote, whether it's in Minnesota (yesterday) or wherever, McLame and Frist do NOT come out strong. The conservatives do.

OHHH!! O.K. Glad you cleared that one up for us!!

He dressed as "VICTOR VICTORIA". That makes everything much better!!! I guess he could have dressed up as Jason from Friday the Thirteenth. Now THAT would have been much worse, no?

Glad he has such a GOOD sense of humor and public decorum.

Perhaps he could go to the U.N. dressed up as VICTOR VICTORIA. I think they'd all appreacite that very much.

The nomination is Guiliani's IF he wants it. He would win the general election in a landslide.

Your take on the primaries is wrong and he would win several in the South. There is NO credible opposition from those far right conservatives would support.

It looks as though your choice is between Guiliani and McCain.

Even if Hillary! runs.

Just because this is a common mantra on FR there is no reason to believe McCain or Guiliani will not do well in GOP primaries. It will take more than the Evil Eye or running a pygmy to beat either of them.

Just because either or both are hated by the far right there is no reason to believe that will damage them that much. Particularly since there will be several conservative candidates running in the primaries. Besides the Ultra conservatives do not make up more than 20% of the vote in them.
