Bush is the Next Reagan
Jun 4, 2006
Slater Bakhtavar - Persian Journal
The same people who heavily criticized former President Reagan for his tough stance against Communism and for his aggressive push for democracy in Eastern Europe are now attacking President Bush for his tough stance against fundamentalism and his aggressive push for democracy in the Middle East.
-They argued then that Communism would never fall - it did They argue now that Islamic Fundamentalism will never fall - it will
-They argued then that the Soviet Union is too strong - it wasn't
They argue now that the insurgency is too strong - it isn't
-They argued that Reagans vision of democracy in East Europe would never work - it did
They argue now that Bushs vision of democracy for the mid-east would never work - it will
They argued then that Reagans evil empire speech was a failure - it wasn't
They argue now that Bushs axis of evil speech is a failure - it won't be
-They argued then that former soviet bloc countries wouldn't embrace democracy - they did
They argue now that middle east countries would never embrace democracy - they will
-They argued then that Eastern Europeans nations would never be our allies - they are
They argue now that middle eastern countries will never be our allies - they will be
-They argued then that people without God could never embrace democracy - they did
They argue now that Muslims will never embrace democracy - they will
-They argued then that President Reagan was unrealistic - he wasn't
They argue now that President Bush is unrealistic - he'll prove he isn't
-They argued then democracy isn't universal to former Communists - it was
They argue now democracy isn't universal to Middle Easterners - it will be
-They argued then that funding of pro-democracy groups in Eastern European countries won't work - it did
They argue now that funding of pro-democracy groups won't work in the Middle East - it will
The same exact critcism was directed at Reagan. The future will be the judge of President Bush and my guess is that he will be judged as the Great Liberator of the Middle East.
"Reagan did NOT cut government at all"
No but he cut Mondale down in the election 49-1
How many states did Bush carry?
I read not long ago an interesting post about how when the first employers got hit with sanctions under the Reagan Amnesty laws they went screaming to their Congresscritters.
The Congresscritters looked at the thread to their reelection campaign funds and went screaming to the Bureaucrats who administer the law. The Agencies looked at the threat to their funding by the Congress and quietly stopped enforcing the law.
Thus, it would seem that employer sanctions will never work.
The ban on PBA is conservative
Building up the military is conservative.
Standing up against Kyoto and the World Court is conservative.
Stopping funding of international abortions is conservative.
His entire pro-small business economic policy is conservative.
That's just to name a few..............once again, it seems that you haven't thought this through very carefully.
You're getting dangerously close to the edge with comments like that.
"You debate like a dem....you hypothesize and when you are questioned about something you said, you parse the words to make them fit into your theory..
How clever.."
Shall we not argue about the argument and stick with the discussion at hand? I remain open to any specific argument you may have relevant to the topic of the thread.
Sure you aren't hoping for that.
I'm hoping we close the borders and cut spending.
How bout u
I never said that it made either of them 'great.' It just makes both of them conservative.
Right about these items BUT he is WRONG about giving 'amnesty to illegal immigrant lawbreakers'----especially those who fly a mex flag above the one I spent 5 years of my life defending---if he continues to push for breaking our laws for his favorite people, he will go down in history as destroying the USA
Bush chose to campaign for fellow Republicans, and increased majorities in both Houses.
One more way that Bush has done more for the Republican party than Reagan did.
President Bush signed the ban on partial birth abortion.
It was also nice to see Justices ruling 5-4 against making whistleblowers immune from prosecution, hinting that Justice Alito will be more conservative than Justice Sandra Day O'Conner was.
The Supreme Court has a great deal to do with whether laws that are passed actually get to be enforced.
"Bush chose to campaign for fellow Republicans, and increased majorities in both Houses"
And what have the GOP done with their majorities on cutting spending, enforcing current border law.
Here's a clue: if government grows faster than the economy for a long enough time, Americans will lose all our freedoms.
"I never said that it made either of them 'great.' It just makes both of them conservative."
No, you did not say that.
On balance Reagan was conservative. On balance Bush is not.
You pointed to Reagan's 49-1 victory as superior to Bush. I merely pointed out that Bush's campaigning for others, perhaps at his own expense, was a better thing to do.
And in addition, the Republican majority has given us two originalist, conservative Supreme Court justices, who will move America to the right for perhaps as many as 50 years.
Reagan gave us Sandra Day O'Connor..........who supported PBA.
The Clintons threw everything at Newt including, yes, dirt. But it was more than just dirt. The Clintons demonized conservatism and for senior citizens, soccer moms and others more gullible, it worked.
Reagan made no progress on abortion. Reagan moved the SC to the left.
Bush has made significant progress in 'culture of life' issues. And Bush has moved the SC significantly to the right.
On balance, they are BOTH conservative.
Well said - thank you.
Nope, ex has been with us for a while.
So who WAS that suetonius troll in his former FR life?
You really didn't "miss" anything worth reading.
