Basra was NEVER "peaceful" it was just under Iranian influence, which the Brits were more than happy to allow, as long as they kept things quiet.
Recently Iran has been 'activating' some of them, to diminish the 'negotiations' (ugh) at the UN, and the strength of the US hand.
BASRA WAS NEVER PEACEFUL.
I agree it was quiet but never peaceful. We did a clever balancing act there but now Iran is pushing their influence there it is a different story.
