Boyd faces up to 5 years in prison, $250,000 fine
- A federal jury convicted a former aide to U.S. Rep. John Conyers of failing to appear for his sentencing in a fraud case.
DeWayne Boyd, 49, was convicted of the charge Wednesday, U.S. Attorney Stephen Murphy said Thursday.
Boyd, formerly of Detroit, had been convicted Dec. 15, 2004, of charges including mail fraud, making false declarations under oath, making false statements to investigators, bankruptcy fraud and theft of government property.
U.S. District Judge Robert Cleland ordered that Boyd remain in custody pending an Aug. 29 sentencing hearing for the original fraud conviction and the failure to appear conviction.
The maximum penalty for failure to appear is five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
In the original fraud case, the government said Boyd stole more than $100,000 from vendors and sponsors of a 1999 conference in New Orleans for black farmers.

Former aide to U.S. Rep. John Conyers convicted...
But was he "former" when he engaged in this wrongdoing? That would be more damaging...
Conyers is a hard-core communist and will do anything and everything to destroy America.
If Conyers had the power, every Freeper would be in a most uncomfortable gulag.
Oh, yeh...Conyers - D, as in democrat, dipwad, Detroit dork.
Also...
Wife's tunnel vision would honor Conyers

It pays to have your spouse on the Detroit City Council.
If you're U.S. Rep. John Conyers Jr., you may even get a tunnel named after you.

"Boyd is a former aide to Willie Brown when he was the speaker of the California Assembly...
Boyd stole about $162,000 from four vendors and sponsors of a 1999 conference in New Orleans for black farmers...
Boyd was fired from the office of Conyers, D-Mich., in 2002."
If Democrats win the House this fall 2006...
John Conyers will take over the Judiciary Committee and he has promised to launch impeachment hearings.
How well we know...
I don't think that "culture of corruption" schtick is working out too well for the dems.
And Conyers, if he keeps running his mouth is going to find a prison cell. For himself.
In the original fraud case, the government said Boyd stole more than $100,000 from vendors and sponsors of a 1999 conference in New Orleans for black farmers. One sponsor was the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
I don't get it. Having a conference in New Orleans for black farmers seems like a fraudulent premise to begin with. But it is good to know that at least the USDA can account for where 100k of their money disappeared to. That only leaves them with a few billion unaccounted for.
Woohoo!
Prison is a good place for Willie, Conyers, and their friends.
One down, two to go.
