MICHELLE SHEPHARD AND STAN JOSEY
STAFF REPORTERS

Police from across the GTA, led by the RCMP's anti-terrorism task force, swooped down on as many as 12 locations Friday night to arrest members of what is being described as a homegrown terrorist cell. Police remained tight-lipped about the massive operation, but have scheduled a news conference for 10 a.m. Saturday.

RICK MADONIK/TORONTO STAR
A joint forces operation brings terrorism suspects for processing at the Durham Regional Police station at Kingston and Brock roads in Pickering on Friday evening.

Shortly after the first arrests the suspects were driven to a heavily-guarded Pickering police station.

The station, on Brock Rd. in Pickering, was surrounded by a heavy ring of police security. A long line of unmarked police cars with suspects sat inside the security perimeter. About every 15 minutes or so another car would be admitted to the station's underground parking garage, where suspects entered the station for processing.

Heavily-armed members of the Durham region tactical unit were stationed at one-metre intervals around the station. Dozens of plainclothes officers, and uniformed RCMP, Durham and Toronto police were involved in the processing.

According to the Star's sources, the Canadian spy service CSIS has been monitoring the group since 2004, and an RCMP criminal investigation was launched last year.

Police have not said why they acted Friday night, and would not say how well-organized the group is, or whether it is armed.

“It is very serious,” a source who asked not to be named told Canadian Press. "These people had plans.”

While the intended target is unclear, the plan was to detonate an explosive device in Ontario, the source said.

“That’s the tool of choice for anybody who wants to cause damage.”

For full coverage, including the background of the group and how it came to police attention, see the Saturday Star and come back to thestar.com for updates throughout the day.

Well, I want to know where this 'training camp'is? North of GTA? Has the camp been dismantled?

This whole incident has me extremely worried as Ahmed was stopped crossing over the borders. And given the hotbed between Detroit, Toledo, Cleveland, and Syracuse...they can quietly cross the border for training!

Trying to recall the last major announcement on indictments out of Toledo, but they talked about a 'camp' too, when the 3 guys were brought in.

It's up on the Bruce Peninsula (which separates Georgian Bay from Lake Huron proper) - North-West of Owen Sound, about 3 hours drive from Toronto

Good job Canada, the police and security forces were on the ball to stop these guys before they could strike. Now it is the turn of the lawyers and the courts, don´t think they will shine as much as the police.

The thing that always bothers me is the number of US citizens plotting to attack targets in our own country (the terrorist arrest in Atlanta), yet we never hear the word treason mentioned.

"...the first thing people notice on entry into Canada is the complete metrification of weights and measures."

Oh, is that why gas is so much cheaper in Canada?

Answer: Gas prices in Canada are in Litre's not gallons.

We recently took some friends to Vancouver who had never been to Canada. They were shocked at how low the gas prices were.

When I explained it to them they realized that nearly $4/gal wasn't such hot deal.

Can we wall off the Northern border too?

The how do explain it's number 10 in GDP?

The 10th wealthiest nation on the planet has a crap economy? Nonsense

That it excludes many of its citizens is a different issue.

My comment was directed/addressed to both of you:

"... the Canadian government is merely mini Marxists/Leninists/Maoists ..." - hosepipe

"Please indicate exactly which comment(s) were offensive, and why the comment was perceived as offensive. In the event that the Canadian government is going out of its way to secure the US borders without demanding or whining for renumeration, let me know." - ARealMothersSonForever

Perhaps try going to www.CanadianAlly.com and attempting to educate yourselves?

BTW, it took a while answering you as I've been busy posting.
Notice how much you're hearing about this story via America's msm?

On one hand God bless any Canadian freepers..
On the other Canada STILL has not learned Socialism is Slavery by Givernment..
I curse Americas socialism asking me to tolerate Canada's beyond the pale..

Yeah I know about Alberta and a few other places.. I'm talking about Canada generally largely and overwhelmingly.. Canada is NOT a Free Republic.. its not even a FREE Democracy.. and doubt many know the difference.. there OR in the U.S...

[ Their parliament would vote to allow shar'ia, but the good people might see things differently. ]

Canada is URP-lite.. but not too light, the muzzies are reproducing like rats.. Canada is behind URP in that way.. but not too far behind.. Kanuckistan used to be byword.. but its getting to be not too funny anymore.. All while Canada generally is oblivious..

It's most likely that the original leads came from muslim kids who grew up here. I've heard a lot of them complain about imams condemning terrorism in English while endorsing it in Arabic.

I'm too busy to debate this issue with you right now but, suffice to say, it would be quite easy to point to several areas Stateside wherein much of what you've said is equally true.

The point is that Canadian FReeper find generalized comments about ALL Canadians, offensive & counter-productive and, in particular, needlessly insulting to the countless families with branches on both sides of our border.

I'd add that never once (!) have I ever heard of any Canadian conservative lumping the vast majority of decent Americans in with the likes of the vile Clintons and/or Kennedys.
We merely expect this the same discernment & proper respect from our American FRiends in return.

Fortunately they're not admitted to the Canadian bar. It'll have to be a group of pro bono lawyers from the People's University of Toronto and Belinda Stronach, Billy Bob Clinton's latest um...paramour. :-)

This New Yorker is thinking of all our Canadian friends today and congratulating their RCMP and security forces for their good work.

I don't think the Democrats are dumb enough to touch this with a ten foot pole.

I could be wrong though!

True; I spend much of my FR time specifying just this fact..
Suffice it to say, the U.S. is BECOMING a Canada.. i.e. a democracy vs a republic..
A fact many/some Canadian freepers have posited.. and we should be "careful".. Socialism does not play well with other ideology's, never has, never will..

Socialism is a political social symptom of a political social disease.. Democracy..

The U.S. Constitution has 3 words found NOWHERE within, 1) democracy.. 2) democratic.. 3) democrat.. ON PURPOSE it is not an oversight.. Our founders were much much more intelligent than the founders of Canada's political system.. for they KNEW democracy was a political social disease.. Canada became infected with Englands political disease.. to this day.. a pity.... but its true..
