Bust nets suspected terrorists across GTA

Police from across the GTA, led by the RCMP's anti-terrorism task force, swooped down on as many as 12 locations Friday night to arrest members of what is being described as a homegrown terrorist cell. Police remained tight-lipped about the massive operation, but have scheduled a news conference for 10 a.m. Saturday.

Shortly after the first arrests the suspects were driven to a heavily-guarded Pickering police station.
The station, on Brock Rd. in Pickering, was surrounded by a heavy ring of police security. A long line of unmarked police cars with suspects sat inside the security perimeter. About every 15 minutes or so another car would be admitted to the station's underground parking garage, where suspects entered the station for processing.
Heavily-armed members of the Durham region tactical unit were stationed at one-metre intervals around the station. Dozens of plainclothes officers, and uniformed RCMP, Durham and Toronto police were involved in the processing.
According to the Star's sources, the Canadian spy service CSIS has been monitoring the group since 2004, and an RCMP criminal investigation was launched last year.
Police have not said why they acted Friday night, and would not say how well-organized the group is, or whether it is armed.
“It is very serious,” a source who asked not to be named told Canadian Press. "These people had plans.”
While the intended target is unclear, the plan was to detonate an explosive device in Ontario, the source said.
“That’s the tool of choice for anybody who wants to cause damage.”

my girlfriend lives right up in that region. She said there was an invasion of middle eastern type people after 9/11. I wish Canada would get their butts in line and start being seriously concerned about terrorism.

I think this news should DISPEL once andfor all the notion that joining the coalition to depose Saddam endangers your country and increases the chances of militants attacking you.
If this logic holds, then we should see Canada SAFE from any terrorist attacks since they, together with Germany and France ACTIVELY OPPOSED the Iraq invasion.

Ali Dirie, 22, and Yasin Mohamed, 23 both Canadians from the Toronto area
face weapons-related charges and are in police custody in Niagara Falls, Ontario,
according to a police statement.
Ontario's Provincial Weapons Enforcement Team and the Niagara Regional Police Service are investigating.
From the list of those arrested yesterday:

7. Yasim Abdi Mohamed, 24, Kingston;

Canada will stick their heads back in the sand just like they always do. Yep, their poilice thwarted a terrorist attack. The London police thwarted FIVE attempts to bomb the subway before 7/7 unfortunately got past them.
London has more experience with terrorism than Canada. The back-patting from Canadians on how their police are able to protect them, unlike the US gov't was able to protect the US from 9/11, will come back to bite them is the azz.

Most Americans are still sleepwalking, in deep denial that anything threatens endless rounds of shopping, extraordinary entertainments, and if they think about terror at all, it's just something that happens to other people.
All of us are in a fight for the soul and very existence of the West, but you'd never know it unless you go looking online.
No civilized person on earth is immune from terror as long as this toxic ideology flourishes.
The first thing to do is recognize the threat for what it is, and stop agonizing about whether the police/intelligence work required to uncover such plots will be damned afterwards as 'racist'. US media appears to be burying the story of the Canadian arrests; frequently the names of the adults rounded up are not mentioned which is supposed to make us think that they have names like Smith or Iacobucci or Nevsky or Suzuki. No one is fooled by this silly ruse.
Not all Muslims are terrorists but of late all terrorists have been Muslims. Muslims appalled by the acts committed in the name of Islam can do two things: 1) change Islam or 2) leave Islam, and become Buddhists or Unitarians or whatever they choose.
Once upon a time, a very long time ago, Islamic culture was among the most advanced on earth, but that hasn't been true in a very long time. Contemporary Islamic culture contributes little to the world that is positive or useful; the remaining slaveholders of the world are Muslims. Nearly all of the science underpinning our lives has come out of the West or from people educated in a Western fashion. All the decent impulses in humanity in the last few hundred years--the emancipation of women, the elimination of slavery, the willingness to assimilate anyone who will live by Western ideals--have come from the West.
The West is worth defending. It's that simple.
