"They are teaching the sheep to follow the sheep dog."

I think I'll continue to follow the Shepherd. Of course, I expect that's why they're trying to take Him out.

"In fact, why don't we take all the kids away from all the parents at birth, and give them to the state to raise?"

Seems I remember that they used to do that somewhere. Oh yeah, communist Russia.

You're conflating direct smoking with second hand smoke. Chemically they are totally different and if you'd been following this issue at all you'd know that.

Cheers, and stay away from the bbq pit.

I will tell you what: people aren't quitting. We have started rolling our own and not paying into the stupid state coffers anymore. Let the lawmakers go after someone else for a change. They done shot the gift horse in the mouth when it comes to cigarette taxes.

Ah, but the Huck (RINO par excellence) has made sure that you are taxed, perhaps just not as much as buying 'store-bought' cigarettes. He is putting extra taxes on anything to do with smoking, roll your own papers, lighters, hell even ashtrays!

The seven city councilmen (sic) here in Pine Bluff pulled the same communist dictatorship cr@p late last year. They don't smoke (at least in public) , so neither should the people that foot the bill.

Besides, it's so much healthier for people to have to stand in the middle of the street, in any kind of weather than sitting in a room fitted with a very expensive exhaust fan designed especially for that purpose.

A petition was started to put the no-smoking ban up for vote failed by something like 100 names, because (and this from an insider) many signatures were never counted because the signatures looked fake so entire sheets of signatures were thrown out!

Lovergirl: I'm gonna smoke. Don't like it? Well, stay the hell away from me. So much for a FREE country. Now I'm gonna have a cigarette and a cup of coffee. :>D

Exactly what I'm doing!

I was in radio when all this no-smoking nonsense first started. I remember reading story after story of the non-smokers saying, "All we want is a small area in restaurants away from the smokers so we can eat without smelling their smoke."

The socialists/communists/smoking Nazis have learned well from their god, Marx.

Facts are, life is not always happy or fair, even for kids. Expecting the government to make it so is just asking for trouble.

You hit the nail with that one, LEL. I keep looking and looking, but I can't find the word "fair" anywhere in the Constitution.

"Does anybody have a problem with the fact that minors cannot buy tobacco?"

Well, it always seemed a bit silly to me since I was going to the store for my mama's cigarettes when I was 6 years old, and since minors USED to be able to smoke with their parents' permission. And since having to be 18 - 21 to buy alcohol never kept a kid from drinking, why would it keep them from smoking. If that's the worse thing they ever do, I'd say they were in pretty good shape.

I am not suggesting that kids should be smoking. I would never have been one of those parents that gave permission, but the point is that it was the parents who had the authority to make decisions on behalf of their minor children....not the state. Now, the only authority parents have is that which the state allows them. Of course, we know that the "adults" who make these decisions are ever so much more competent and pure of motive than parents are in choosing what is best for THEIR OWN children. < /sarcasm >

"At 59 years I still remember gasping for breath in the winters when the windows were up and the cigarette smoke gave every thing a grey appearance."

"Didn't you ever ask them to crack the window and clear the smoke out? VIrtually any parent, even 40 years ago would."

I hated talking to my mother through a cloud of smoke and I was always waving her smoke out of my face. She used to tell me that "smoke follows pretty people." Yeah, lame; I know. But that was life. I dealt with it. My mom wasn't particularly courteous about it, but I don't think it was intentional. I just don't think she realized how much it bothered me. People are much more aware now, and smokers, in general, are more courteous than they used to be. There are always going to be rude and thoughtless smokers, but these are typically the people who are going to be rude and thoughtless whether they smoke or not.

So was I, but that was back before America was strangled to death.

I smoked for 40 years and then had a major heart attack in august 2004. The smoking did not cause the heart attack, good Louisiana cooking did, but it was discovered that i had full c.o.p.d. and early enphazema??, and it was easy to get off the smokes in the hospital and I just stayed off them.

Oh yeah, I sure do still want one really bad sometime. I am saving a lot of money though. I am a truckdriver and i was buying 2 cartons a week. Lotta money....screw the goobermint!!!

"He put the screws to 30% of his smoking constituents who should be able to govern their OWN lives when it comes to knowing where to smoke and where not to smoke."

He lost weight and decided everybody else in the state needed to do likewise. We started getting these questionaires about our lifestyles, including dictates dietary plans and insurance incentives. There was just a 3-month program that concluded June 1 wherein state employees reported their daily activity level. Coming soon: what they're losing in tobacco revenues, they'll be gaining in "fat tax."

Huckabee is also very pro-illegal alien.

In my opinion, the only way Huckbee is a viable presidential candidate would be if he ran as a democrat.

Do you really believe they fought or died for anyone to tell someone else the state knows better than you do how to live your life????????

Doubt it. But then maybe they fought to ensure we had sufficient laws to protect innocent children from the idiocy of others.

If one tweaks your rant, it would read:

People died on the beaches of Normandy so you could blow smoke into your infant's face at a stoplight.

They did it so we could be free. Free from other governments as well as our own.

But hopefully not free to put our children into harm's way.

BTW, if you folks in Arkansas don't like the law, change it. If enough people want it changed, it will be changed. Your state is no different from any other. You have a constitution, a statehouse, a legislature and a set of laws. All of it existing at the will of the people.

it is illegal in the state of Arkansas to smoke in a private vehicle with a minor

Just act dumb if you get caught.Tell the officer you thought it applies to coal miners or minor birds and you didn't know the new law meant you couldn't smoke with your rug rats in tow.

"I love the smell of pipe tobacco to this day."

I remember family get togethers back when I was a kid. After a big meal the men would get together in the den and talk politics and such and many would light up their pipes. Funny that you never saw them do it any other time. I loved the smell, too. Couldn't stand the smell of a cigar though. Still can't.

If Hitler (a militant non-smoker) had won, ALL smoking would be banned.

I was both driving and smoking at the age of 9.

What would happen to me today? Ship me off to Guantanamo?
